I managed to complete the Arizona Distance Classic Half Marathonthis morning. Considering everything else going on in my life - just showing up was an accomplishment. I walked it again this year. My IT band seems to be OK now, but I didn't want to risk an injury. The weird thing was that I didn't change my diet for this race this year. No carbs! At all! No pasta last night, no bagel this morning. And I improved my pace by 20 seconds per mile. I maintained a 13:30 pace through all the hills. It was a beautiful morning, and it was lots of fun (as always)! Of course, now I feel like my butt is going to fall off, but that's another story!

I'm no where near the front of the pack - don't bother looking for me!

That sounds like a fantastic accomplishment! Wow congrats to you. That is wonderful. I have done half marathons but not a whole one. I love the idea of walking it. Congrats!!
Congratulations Dawn! Those buns of steel might feel a little pain but I bet they're looking good!
Dan - not bad for a 43 year old! My knees held up better than the rest of me! Lots of stretching and yoga really paid off. I think I will go back to short intervals and see how I do...
Karen- This was a half. I wanted to set a goal of a full one (San Antonio Rock N Roll) next year, but it's sooo time consuming! Maybe I will just work on my 5 and 10Ks :-)
Congrats! I'm happy that you did so well!!! My turn is still to come.
Nice going, Dawn! Congratulations. I'm a little curious about the "no carbs" before the race thing, though.
Hi Kent,
The no-carbs thing this year was really an experiment.
I started eating low carb 8 years ago, and managed to lose 120 pounds in two years and have kept it off. Every time I try to eat like a normal person, I gain weight, retain water, and feel terrible.
Last year for the same event I ate fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean proteins (like you're supposed to), and I felt horrible and looked worse. I gained 13 pounds, even though my calories were appropriate to my activity level.
So this year, instead of changing my diet, I just stuck with what works for me - very low carb - all through training and even for the race day. Instead of pasta the night before, I had salmon and salad. I had more energy and endurance than last year, and even had a little "kick" for the last mile.
It just goes to show that we're all a little different, and well, as for me, I'm just really weird!
PS . I miss seeing everyone at TAR, but my mother is very ill, and taking care of her has to come first.
Dawn -- you did it, that's what counts! Congrats on your improvement. Ok --off to gym!
Dawn, congratulations. You're a great inspiration ... time for me to participate in some events again ... starting back with a 5K but walking a half-marathon is actually a possibility ... next year. Hope your mom is feeling better. Give her a hug from all of us.
Hi Dawn,
Congratulations on finishing the race, sounds like you did it at a good pace! :)
