It's a variant of the common Prickly Pear. The first time I saw one, I would have sworn it was spray painted by a graffitti artist.
If not that, it must have been fabricated from metal. Some of them are gun metal grey.
The color just doesn't jive with an easterner's sense of what is natural. There it is, though, sporting spring's first yellow flower.
An Easter cactus! Purple and yellow. A single pad rarely blooms, so this little guy is sort of special. Someone must have said "Bloom where you're planted," and he took it to heart.
My Darlin' and I were walking down the street to a birthday party for a neighbor, but I had to run back to the house for the camera.
I pumped up the contrast a little in the photo below to show off the detail of the flower.

Mike, That is absolutely beautiful. Isn't it amazing what treasures are on this earth for us to enjoy?
Mike - I can't really add to what Jesse just said above. This is a gorgeous plant. Nicely done!
Mike - I have lived in Arizona over 34 years and I have never seen such a beautiful colored cactus! Simply gorgeous colors! Thanks for sharing. I am thinking I need a CD full of your photography for my artwork and banners!! Wow!
MIke in Tucson- It doesn't look real, it's too perfect.
Love the colors Mike! Thank you for not posting any tarantula photos.
Mike, If you had just written about the cactus we probably would have never believed you. As it is this is a first for me too. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Mike,
Gorgeous. I've told you before, you sure make Arizona appealing!
HI Mike isn't the desert beautiful this time of year. I wake up every morning and hear all the birds :)
You don't see the purple ones very often at all - nice capture Mike!
Nice -- Yeah, the purple ones are unique! And I would like to see some tarantula photos. :-)
Mike, I have yet to visit AZ but pictures like this help me see why my wife loves your state so much!
Thats a bad a$$ cactus - I'm a cactus, uhm, enthusiast and have a barrell and one other type from my family's farm in Colorado and both are loving Texas - more warmth & son and they do great during the winter.
Wondering if one of those purple fellas would like to move to Texas?????
Maybe it had some Purple Rain!!! LOL
Looks like the Cactus is happy right where it is and as long as no one messes with it things will be fine. Thanks for the photos
Mike...Thanks for visiting my blog, and thanks for the incredible Tucson picture. You have an "eye" for photography. Thanks for the photos there a work of art.

Mike ~ This is so beautiful! I've never seen anything like it before now. You're fortunate to live in Arizona. I love it there because of the natural beauty.
Nice shot. Purple and yellow are complementary colors. That's why they look so pretty together. What an eye you have Mike.
In other words, God knew just how to put it all together. :)
I was talking about the complementary colors, not your eye. haha
Gorgeous post Mike, I love checking out your blog - I'm glad you're here!
These photos are beautiful! I am familiar with the green variety but have never seen this one - it is fascinating!!!
