Do Your Dance Shoes Fit Properly? Can you forget they're on your feet while you dance?
Properly fitting quality dance shoes for ballroom, latin, swing and country dancing have specific fitting criteria. It is important to understand that dance shoes need to fit differently than your street shoes.
Dance shoes are more than a mere suede sole and not all suede soles are created equal either. There are suede soles that will wear out very quickly. Quality 'chrome' suede soled shoes will last years.
Shoes are standard. Feet are not. Certain styles of shoes will fit foot styles differently. Difficult fits can be reasonably addressed, but not easily come by.
Open toe shoes are the easiest fit and most versatile for many reasons. Dance shoes often will fit 1/2 to a full size smaller than street shoes. In fact many wear the wrong size shoe to compensate for width.

Quality dance shoes should fit snuggly. They should be the correct length - the toe at or near the end of the shoe. Ankle straps can take time to get used to, but they serve the purpose of the snug fit. There should be ideally no movement between the shoe and the foot.
You want to dance without worrying about what your shoes are doing!
Men's shoes - a snug fit length and width, but not as critical to fit as heeled womens shoes.
Happy Dancing!

Thanks for the tip Deborah. My daughter just started dance lessons, and has been teaching me what she's learned, cha cha, rumba.... I'm starting this week and can't wait!
Glad to be of help Debbie. I am passionate about dance and dance shoes!! I've seen too many people settle for cheap shoes, which still cost around $100, often wasted on poor quality. Spend a little more for great shoes and great fit .....and you'll be dancin'!!
I love to dance & those shoes, wow.
Many women try to dance with "street" shoes because they are cheaper. If you are on a budget, then make sure they are leather soled. Or you can take your favorite dancing shoe to the shoe repair person and have him attach a suede sole to it. Dancing shoes are made to flex so you can move or "grip" the floor better. For fairly inexpensive but good dance shoes, Very Fine Shoes is a good investment. You can check out their huge inventory, order online, and have it shipped to you. These shoes are made in China and are worn by professional dancers as well!!
Great to hear from you Cindy! What kind of dance do you do? Have you checked out Marie's Dance group?
Marie always great to hear from you!
People don't realize how shoes affect dance performance. Being in the retail business, I've seen first hand the various struggles with shoes and feet. I am loathe to recommend anything but the best shoes. Quality shoes cost only a little more than cheap poor quality.
Deborah, So true. My favorite pair of dance shoes are dance sneakers. I wear them at open dances so I don't have to worry about people stepping on my toes or kicking my ankles! They have saved me oh so many times! I really hate it when women grind their heels on my big toe. It seems I experience that every time I wear them fancy girlie dance shoes!!
I almost always wear fancy girlie shoes Marie. I just like the way they feel. Sneakers are comfortable - and safe!
I haven't been stepped on (seriously) for a very long time, but I certainly know what it's like! I thought I would die once when a gal at a club stepped onto the top of my foot. My instructor Diane had bones broken that way - from people not staying over their feet. This could lead to a post on staying in your own dance space! and dance floor etiquette! and.....
