Your Top 5 Best Bets for Things to Do in Chilliwack & The Surrounding Area, B.C. this Summer

After just completing a 7 part series on 110 fun things to do in Chilliwack and the surrounding area - I'm thinking this contest came at a most opportune time! I invite you to take a peek and see which ones you think would be the top 5, but since I'm pickin' My Persoal Fav's...........these have got to be it!

1.) The World Sandcastle Championships

What child hasn't fantasized about the ultimate sea creature.?........The invincible Sand Castle..resistent to the tide.....Prince Charming coming to the rescue.........all in the form of sand.... Those indelible sandcastle tools...the bucket , the shovels..........the cookie cutters ........and our all time favorite.......yea ol' self buried to where just your head sticks out........in an attempt to freak out mom!..........Heck I loved sandcastles so much I had a wallpaper border around my kitchen of an 1800's sandcastle scene.......

A tribute to our heritage..

Even politics seems to leave its imprint in the sand...

The other side of camping....

And

And since you're just next door - a hop skip and a jump away - you HAVE to check out Harrison Hot Springs, mineral pools and baths.......you'll think you died and went to heaven...

The lake......perfect for sailing, parasailing....swimming &

The Hot Springs well melt your Troubles all Away

2) Would be the International Airshow! This International Airshow Ranks Number 3 in the Wolrd!

Every since I was a little girl, this was a yearly event/outing with our family.......awe and the power and might of a bird with wings.....Later my first son was to be born on the day of the Annual Airshow August 10th!.......

3.) Well ...3 Would have to be Hell's Gate, Suspension Bridge, Aerial Tram. The Fraser Canyon where 1,370 kilometres of the Fraser River squeezes into a 34 metre (110 ft) wide thundering passage named Hell's Gate. 800 million litres (200 M Gal) of heart stopping rapids hammer through here
which is why Hell's Gate was journaled Simon Fraser's greatest challenge! Its breathtaking, freaky and major vertigo.......but bring your camera!

4.) Gorgeous Cultus Lake - with the Cultus Lake Water Slides almost next door...This was also where I had the privilege of living next to for one whole year! This is where my kids learned to wakeboard and water ski..........it'll always have a soft spot in my heart.....memories of both me when I was 9 and all three of them when they were 9!

Cultus Lake waterslides........A few years back I did a program called Lifeline......One of the major prem- ises was to Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway! Well...............this was my foray into the unknown......I grabbed my two kids and went down every single slide, pool, drop........in the Park......and some of them even twice! Woohoo (thanks Sally) were my kids impressed?.........but no where near as impressed as I was!

As I was about to take the plunge down the death defying 180' Death Drop.......I could hear my then 13 year old son crying out....."don't do it MOM! you could hurt yourself!" lol

As for the Lake itself..........in the fall thru spring its a silent haven and retreat.........in the Summer its a Lake like no other............boaters, swimmers and campers galore............with quaint summer cottages, hot dog stands........amids of gorgeous backdrop of mountains!

5.) And last but not Least the Chilliwack Rodeo and Exhibition...........Yahoooo!

Now I never was much of a country girl............but I always thought it would be fun to marry a cowboy and do some.........'wrangling'...........And I do like cow boy hats and boots! lol

Well here's my Top 5 Best Bets......... you all have fun you hear........its my hometown.......and you'll be glad you popped by!

Liz:  I must be getting old, because of all the things above that you wrote about and took pictures of, I was most impressed with those incredible sand sculptures.  What amazing talent these folks have.  Thanks so much for sharing.

I love the sandcastles too!  I think they're my fav - so I must be old too!

Oh Liz, this is too hard, they all are very, very good. I pick the sandcastles. I have seen pictures of this creative effort and it is amazing. Personally I tie all five for first place because every one of them I could envision spending a day doing.

Liz,

My goodness, you certainly do live in a magnificent area! I'm with Gary...all 5 of these would be wonderful places to visit and would tie for first place.  Even the pictures of Hell's Gate give me vertigo...I don't think I would be brave enough to go on the cable cars.

The sand sculptures are breathtaking...I'm in awe of the talent that created them.

Jo

Ahh Gary thats sweet......Thats what I was thinking - close my eyes........and if I was in town for a week what would I do?

Jo-Anne - I used to live in White Rock which 25 years ago used to hold the World Sand Castle Championships - and my house was 2 blocks from the beach and we could see it all.  It was a major weekend event...........with airshows, clowns balloons, and fabulous sun sea and surf.........loved it! We used to watch the teams come out early in the morning starting out..........now I can't remember but they were really restricted in terms of the tools they could use, how much water, and the amount of people on the team. Fascinating.........but so sad when the tide would come in....

What a wonderful post on your area!!  I love all the pictures but I have to say that the sandcastles held my attention most.  Thank you for sharing.

Barbara - thanks for taking a look and commenting............well I already told you what I thought of VEro Beach!  :-)  Good Luck!

I always love sand sculptures. Thanks for sharing! And thanks for posting to the Things to Do/Places to Visit group. You get a gold star in the group =)

Gee Lisa thanks!  I do think its the first time I've posted there, and I have sooo much to post....I travel a fair bit and have some wonderful stories and photos....but I've always been confused as to whether it should be about places in your hometown...or anywhere that you've travelled.  I love the sandcastles too.  Actually right now I'm just listening to the fireworks......its Canada Day here!

Hi Liz,

What an amazing area you live in! Thanks for sharing the photos... I like the sand-sculptures, too, but the photo collage from tha air-show is pretty cool as well. If I made a trip up there, I think I would have to skip the tram over the Fraser River--too high for me (scared of heights). I would like to stand on the shore and look at the rapids. Hey, thanks for making those conversions for us Americans. You did a fabulous job on this post!

Deborah - thanks for dropping by and taking a peek..and thanks for the comments! ...yes hmmm i've found as i've gotten older I don't quite appreciate the excitement of heights as much!  :-)

That was a great trip down memory lane, I did all of those things as a kid, on summer camping trips with the family.  Thanks!

Georgina - How nice - its great to have those memories!  And Good Luck on Your Post - I went to Maui once as a 17 year old and loved it - now a honeymoon/anniversary might be a whole different experience!  :-)

Fabulous area and amazing photos - how did you get them all?  I think of myself as a fairly good photographer, but those are amazing.  I have to vote for the sand sculputures though...that's just so different.

Excellent top five... I want to do all of them!

What a fun post Liz...and your photos are amazing!

Ruth Marie - Thank you!  The birds eye and one of the airshow were'nt mine, a pilot friend took them........but I'm a photo fantatic........I just spent the day driving to take a listing out of town, and shot over 100 photos........I'm dying to download and see what I actually have!  Thanks for commenting.......the sandcastles are getting a lot of attention........so I might spend the whole day there this year just taking photos!  :-)

Chuck - you're always so game!  You must be a fun dad! :-)

Joan..thank you!  My Uncle used to be a photography for the Yugoslavian Government(everything was government then!) Tourist Bureau!  I'd like a job like that!!  :-)

Liz, I'm in agreement with Karen Ann Stone, the sand sculptures are fantastic - both your photos and the art itself!  You certainly live in an area with some spectacular scenery.

Thanks Brian - it is a beautiful place that sometime easy to take for granted ......oh just once in a wee while the grass seem greaner on the other side!  :-)
