Where to Start
Start in your local market. It is usually a good idea to work with someone who understands local requirements for your manufactured home and who can also anticipate what you should order based on the environmental conditions of the area. For instance, in Modoc County, it is not a good idea to get vinyl siding -- it may be fine in other parts of California, but it won't last here. Or, a high snow load requirement. You obviously don't worry about snow loads in most of California, but it is an issue in Modoc County.
Be sure that you thoroughly investigate the dealer you are considering. Make sure that dealer has a good reputation and that the products being sold are of good quality. Does the dealer have a reputation for good service, or does the dealer appear to drop you after having money in hand? After all, a home is a big investment! Get references on the dealer you are considering - if the dealer doesn't want to give them to you, or is in any way hesitant, run, don't walk to the nearest exit. Talk to people in your area about the dealer. Take a lot of time evaluating the dealer - it is extremely important. Manufactured homes are built to federal standards, but some are clearly better quality than others.
Once you've decided on the dealer and manufacturer of your home, you're ready for the next step.
More to come on buying your manufactured home.
