Changing Technology Changes How We Spend Our Leisure Time

Borders Book Store

While driving on Canoga Avenue yesterday, I noticed that the Borders bookstore was going-out-of-business.  The large yellow and black sign prompted me to do a "U Turn" and double back to the store.  I can't believe we are loosing another business in our community.  This book store was one of my favorite hang outs.  I remember seeing my neighbor and his  three children one evening at the book store.  He said that his family did not own a television set because cable was costly.  He also said that since he did not have television, all three children were "A" students in school.  The book store was a family outing for them.  Because of technology, our society is moving at warp speed for better or worst.  Like the cassette tape, a paperback book will be a thing of the past.

I understand that change is necessary. Whether I like it or not, change will happen.  There are benefits to stop using paper to manufacture books, but there are other consequences to follow.  How many will loose their jobs behind change?  For many people, it will be hard to confront change.

As I stood in line, a man was behind me.  His friend walked along side of him and said, "I love bookstores.  It's a shame that in 5 years, we may not have anymore book stores."  After I purchased my item, I wandered upstairs.  The cafe has a yellow, "Do Not Cross Tape," surrounding the bar, where people once sat with their computers, drinks and books.  On certain evenings, they would feature local performing artist.  It was nice listening to music and sipping on my brew.  The end of an era is upon us.  Good bye Borders.  I will miss you.

If anyone is interested in browsing the Borders for a few good deals, please visit 6510 Canoga Avenue, Canoga Park, CA 91303.  Their contact number is (818) 887-1999.

This is really sad! If you are near downtown Los Angeles, California, please stop by and show your support. The Metropolis Bookstore will be closing its doors soon. The address is 440 South Main Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013. The contact number is 213 612-0174. Please call for store hours. We love our small mom and pop businesses.
