The new Carlsbad High School has gotten the go-ahead and groundbreaking will occur in the Fall of this year (grading and utility work). The new school has been debated and in the planning stages for quite some time, and as with any project of this magnitude, has been somewhat controversial.

In part, the controversy is due to the location - at the junction of Cannon and College just south of Calavera Hills. The area now is open space which has been agricultural in nature. However, the Final Environmental Impact Report was certified in February 2009 by the Board of Trustees.
The new high school in the Carlsbad Unified School District is slated to open for fall classes in 2012 with a capacity of about 1500 students.

Jeff, I'm always amazed by parent who buy a house for the high school when their children are infants. Then everything changes with a new school and new boundaries. Sounds like Carlsbad has many fine schools.
Pat - yep I agree. Some folks will not even consider another area becuase of the school, including at the elementary level. Since things CAn change with the population and new boundaries can be set, it pays to be somewhat flexible, if you can. Plus the program can vary within the school district.

Hi Jeff! Many here select their home based on high school--it's not necessarily for their children but, for the resale in 2 - 5 years! They're savvy buyers and know that certain zones bring higher dollar. Of course we can't tell them that, they have to figure it out on their own and many post that demand right off the bat, without ever being in the area!
Great post BTW!
Jeff we just completed our new High School this year, and it also had a lot of controversy before construction, during construction, and after construction. The price tag started at $85,000,000 and end up costing $105,000,000.
Good schools have a huge impact on property values it sounds like the local residents realize that.
Debe - I suspect it's true everywhere. And there are buyers, of course, who want those school districts purely for the resale - no kids at home.
George - not sure what this is costing but I bet it's mind-boggling. Will have to investigate.
Terry - so true. The impact can be pretty staggering, too.
