Carlsbad's coastline is one long beach, uninterrupted from the northern boundary at Oceanside to the seamless merge to Encinitas, and much of the Carlsbad beach is State Beach.
But there are a number of different beaches, designated as such by name, parking area and even the jetties where the lagoons join the ocean. Apart from the official names (like South Carlsbad State Beach) there are some interesting unofficial names of beaches that appear on certain maps, or used by locals in the know.
My personal favorite is Hole-in-the-Fence Beach, named for, you guessed it, the hole in the fence (I assume). There isn't a sign telling you such but the fence says it all. It doesn't attract many folks because there is limited parking (just along the bluff) and access is down narrow winding paths through the brush. On my recent visit it seemed to be primarily a popular place for surfing.
Here are a few of the other fun beach names you see or hear about:
Warm Waters
Egor's/Old Man's
Off Shore
Turnarounds
Cherry
Middles
HERE'S SOME GOOD NEWS ABOUT OUR CARLSBAD BEACHES!
The Carlsbad beaches were just awarded an A+ rating for water quality by Santa Monica-based environmental group Heal-the-Bay who rates over 500 monitoring locations at California beaches. You can read the full report here. Glad we're not on the list of bummer beaches.

Jeff, very creative name. Now if there were two holes in the fence would it be called the "Two Hole In The Fence Beach" .......... LOL
George - LOL. Yeah, I think so.

Thank you for sharing your opinion. Each of the beaches in San Diego has their own personality, quirks and local crowd. Most of the beaches are suitable for kids play, surfing and just about anything that allows you to enjoy the beach. The family friendly beaches are Carlsbad beaches, Oceanside Beaches, La Jolla, Del Mar Beach, and Romantic Beaches etc . All of this information I found on http://www.carlsbadbeaches.com/beaches-in-san-diego.html . It’s a great guide to all of the Carlsbad area beaches.
