One Ringie Dingie…Two Ringie Dingies…
The decision has been made and the news is out.
Carlsbad and other areas are losing the 760 area code and gaining a new one. The 760 area code covers a huge area, from the coast all the way to Anza Borrego in the desert, and is one of the 2 largest area codes in all of California.
The North County area has become overloaded with phones, and thus a shortage of phone numbers, so a geographic split will occur in 6 months (from May 9); 6 months later the new area code will be mandatory.
The new area code is 442.
The North County towns with the new area code are:
Hmmm, at least I have 6 months before I have to change ALL of my marketing, blogs, websites, handouts, etc. Better get to work making the list.

September 2008 NOTE: This is not a FINAL decision. A hearing has been held to listen to concerns and more discussion will take place before a decision is made about making the change, or having an overlay.

Jeff, it took me a while to get use to our new area code when we got one a few years back, and it is still a little confusing sometimes.
Every time I hear about area codes I think of the Steinfeld episode about area codes.
We underwent and area code change a number of years ago and it's a pain. All of a sudden numbers that were previously free to call were suddenly a charge. Of course, for an additional fee, we could upgrade the landline so we could call any number in that area - for an additional monthly fee. Of course, if we just use our cells, all those calls are free in our monthly plan. That's why more and more people are dropping their land lines.
Hi Jeff, I was wondering when this would appear. There may in fact be a shortage but the change is going to cost a lot of people a huge amount of money. Business, personal stationary, it is amazing the dollars. Glad it is not e, I already had to do that once. What till you see how many places you have your name and phone number printed. All the best with this Jeff.
Jeff, That is a real pain changing all your information just for an area code. Oh well, at least you have some time. Good luck!
George - well I went through this before, back in Boston but didn't have to change my business number. now I will. The thought is not pleasant.
Jeff
Elaine - well the costs WILL be subtantial I expect. Not sure if the cell phones are affected or not. I know a lot of folks who no longer are using land lines becuase of the costs, among other issues.
Jeff
Thanks, William. As soon as I start thinkiong about all the marketing pieces I need to change, and all the websites, it makes me cringe. Gotta get started soon - I can at least save copies so I'll be ready!
Jeff
Roberta - yep a definite pain. PLus now I have to remember my new number. Not sure if we have to dial the area code when dialing in our area or not. Back east we had to ALWAYS dial all 10 digits no matter where we called. A nuisance for sure.
