Are you in the right profession for you?

Have you ever thought you were in the wrong profession? If you have you're probably not alone. There are many people who get into the sales profession or opt to own a business of their own for the wrong reasons. Money seems to be a guiding force. Now don't get me wrong, money is certainly a wonderful byproduct of selling products and services through your business.

Here's some reasons why I'm in business for myself:

1. Freedom to work on my own terms

2. Ability to help people who need my services

3. Ability to help others who want to do what I do

4. Ability to earn principaless interest for life

5. Ability to help others earn principaless interest for life

Being in business has been a wonderful and exciting journey. I've learned more about myself over the last 30 years working with prospects and clients than you could ever imagine. I've learned to accept "no" from prospects. I've learned to accept "yes" from new clients. What I've learned the most is people do what they want to do and not what I want them to do. Learning to be OK with the choices people make hasn't come easy but it has helped me mature so much.

Years ago I used to think that people were just plain stupid for not getting my "bright idea." I would say things like, "how can they not see it?" What I came to realize was that I was with the right people with the wrong idea. It wasn't their fault. It was my fault for not taking the time to get to know them and the things they were looking for.

What I found to be the best thing for me over the years has been simply to listen and respond. Here's an example, I would hear someone I was having a conversation with say they were just tired of paying so much for the landscaping. I've got a great landscaper, so I would say, "I've got a great landscaper, I can give you his contact information if you want it." Notice I didn't ask a question. I just made a statement. There's no pressure, even with helping them solve a problem that they've made known.

What's so great about being in business for myself is the people I network with. I have a special group of people in my network where we purpose to think about each other during the course of our activity during the day. You would be surprised how we pass referrals to each other just because we listen to people with the intention of being a help to them "no matter what." Our listening has changed so drastically that we're referring one another to others who aren't even part of our network.

It's so much easier and less stressful being in a position of not having to pressure people to do something they weren't intending to do in the first place. Business owners and people in the sales profession have to be in a place of peace with themselves before they pursue offering their products and services. Believe me desperation comes through even when we think we're fooling people.

Stay Blessed,

Ced
