I love a good farmer's market any time. There's something about being in the open air, perusing stalls of fresh produce and other goods produced by local artisans - breads cheeses, jams an jellies, honey, freshly made tamales (a common item in our Southern California farmer's markets) and so much more.. The produce is always so much fresher than what you get in the stores, and often at a better price, but not always. Who cares?!
The Hollywood Farmer's Market is a real treat, perhaps more so because of the wide array of organic foods and places to grab a snack, AND the location. Markets in the city have such a different feel, perhaps more so because of the contrast between city life and farm stands clustered along normally crowded streets.
Hollywood is such a famous community, being known at some level by most folks due to the entertainment industry, that a market here takes on a completely unique feeling. People watching in Hollywood is always fascinating, and despite the seediness that has infiltrated some areas, the town is like no other.
We were in Los Angeles recently and had the chance to experience the Hollywood Farmer's Market ourselves. It's impossible to not buy when walking through a farmer's market, and the visual contrast of city life and farm was dramatic at this one. Of all the markets I have attended (Carlsbad, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, to name JUST a few), people watching here was the best, with a striking cast of characters and a broad mix of languages, reflecting the international flavor of one of the country's largest cities.
The young woman ranting on and on about communism in the middle of one of the intersections was stark contrast to the calm demeanor of the fellow from the White Horse Organic farm project. Yes, they are promoting planting an organic garden on the grounds of the White House. Volunteers were scurrying about soliciting support, and donations for keeping gay marriages legal in California.
All in all it was an entertaining, and fruitful (pun intended) way to spend a Sunday morning. Check it out if you are in the Hollywood area.

Jeff
When all is gets out of hand we still have the tranquility of farmers markets. Years ago it was just produce, but now they add a lot more to the equation.
Sincerely
Tom Braatz
Jeff, this sounds even more fun than most farmers' markets! So did you see anyone famous?
Jeff: I go to the Hollywood Farmers Market whenever I have a chance. Last time I was there we saw Uma. And I love those tamales.
I usually wind up at our South Pasadena Farmers Market on Thursday nights. It is smaller, but you can find pretty much everything you could want and we can walk to it if we are so inclined (not too often:o))
Jeff you really are one of the Masters of Localism.......Farmer's markets are always great places to go! Love the take on the double decker! :-)
Tom - so true. They are getting more and more complex. And sometimes have nothing to do with farmers.
Patricia - only Minny Driver, but there could have been others hiding behind the designer shades.
Michelle - LOL. Especially if you buy a lot of stuff.
Liz - I appreciate the compliment. And, yes, that bus was pretty cool looking. As was the dude representing the WHO Farm Project. LOL.
