Huntington State Beach Lifeguard Tryouts
March 7, 2009
9:00 am
This Saturday at 9:00 am, there are are try-outs for the Huntington Beach State Lifeguards. The tryouts begin promptly at 9:00 am, so if you are planning on competing in the event, be sure and arrive approximately one hour early for registration and instructions in the event. If you are a spectator, I would still suggest arriving early to park and walk down to the beach. The event will be held at Huntington State Beach Lifeguard Headquarters at Magnolia and Coast Highway.
Some of the participants wear wet suits in the event, and some do not. As of today, the air temp is approximately 55 degrees, and the water temp is between 56 and 58 degrees. I have been told, swimming in a wet suit can be more constrictive.
Here is a picture from last year's event for the participants lining up ready to complete the swim.

The State Lifeguards provide the lifeguard boat, a personal water craft, and there are guards on paddle boards as well.

The existing lifeguards who are re-qualifying for the event, have to complete the swim within 20 minutes. The new participants have to compete in multiple events including a run - swim - run.
For more information on this event, please see this article
See the Huntington State Beach Lifeguard website.
I will be there taking photographs (although it is supposed to be overcast and cooler), and look forward to the participants competing in this event.

Steve - it is supposed to be bigger this year. And not all of them make it. They have to pass the competitive events and the lifeguard training if they are new. They really do need that many, lifeguards have a lot of water to watch. This is only for the state beach, there are other city agencies as well.
I remember your daughter did this, right Sharon? I'm sure it is hard to qualify and get this job.
Hi Sharon,
HB is one of my very favorite places, I love to bike there. This should be a great event, and who wouldn't want to be able to say they're a life guard in Surf City!
BTW, the Pacific Shoreline-Superbowl Sundays (has a new name now doesn't it?) is one of the best 1/2 marathatons I've ever done, almost all flat and scenic beauty.
Gary - yes my daughter did it for the past two years, and is going to be in it this year as well. I will take pictures and post another blog probably. She has been training and is motivated to do really well. She is going to be one who swims without a wetsuit. I am proud of her. Thank you for remembering that she has participated in this before!
Lynda- I love to as well. Next time you are here, look me up and I will catch up with you for sure.
I would love to check out that half marathon.
Brrrrrrrr! Sharon! That water must be pretty cold!! Good luck to your daughter, and it sounds like it will be fun to watch. Looking forward to your post!
