The 30th Annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition gets underway this weekend at Imperial Beach, the most southwesterly city in the continental United States, even more southwesterly than your Mission Valley condo!

Mission Valley to Imperial Beach

On Saturday, August 7, at 9:00 a.m., the street festival begins with vendors, arts and crafts, entertainment, and food along Seacoast Drive, which will be closed to traffic for the event.

Imperial Beach, California

Sand castleSand castleSaturday afternoon will feature the Kids-N-Kastles Competition, but the big stuff begins at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday when the professional sand carvers begin building their "sand castles" (very much a misnomer for these professionals) in an effort to acquire the title of Master's Champion.

Competition is open to amateur sand carving teams as well, with everyone competing for more than $21,000 in cash prizes. Competition concludes at 2:00 p.m., after which awards will be presented.

Viewing is open until 4:00 p.m., although you can stick around outside of the viewing area for several hours and watch the high tide wash away the creations. This is when cameras with telephoto lenses come in handy.

If you've never been to a sandcastle competition, this is the one not to miss. However, upwards of 350,000 people crowd into this small beach town each year for the competition, so carpooling or public transportation is highly recommended.
