Mouse in a sand trapThis past weekend in Imperial Beach saw tens of thousands of people invade the Imperial Beach pier and sands for the 30th U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition. Along with lots of vendors selling unusual wares, there were many more vendors selling fair-style food, of which two of my favorites are the Oriental shishkabobs and the grilled corn on the cob.

Call Jim Frimmer for all your San Diego County real estate needsI walked through the vendor and food area once (and got a shishkabob and some grilled corn on the cob for lunch) and walked through the competition area three times, twice to see the sandcastles as they were being built, and then once to see the completed products.

I've put together a slide show below, but it doesn't do justice to the magnitude of what these sand sculptors do. They come from all over the world, and some of them are professionals, meaning that all they do is travel the world building sandcastles in competitive events. Something about that just doesn't seem fair.

The U.S. Open is always held in Imperial Beach, and I believe it is always the first full weekend in August, so if you need a vacation in August 2011, I can recommend one Imperial Beach and the 31st U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition.
