Sunny Jim's cave in La Jolla

Over in La Jolla is one of the few sea caves in the United States that is also accessible by land.

This is Sunny Jim's cave, named by Frank Baum, the author of The Wizard of Oz, way back in the late 1920s. Baum lived in Coronado and La Jolla for many years, and there is a Wizard of Oz museum in Coronado.

Access to the cave from land is through a tunnel dug by hand through a hundred feet or so of sandstone. There are 144 steps leading from The Cave Store above to the cave below at sea level:

The steps and walls are very wet, so if you go, wear some good shoes and be sure to hold the handrails. Also watch your head because headroom is limited in some areas.

Once you finish touring Sunny Jim's cave, walk over to La Jolla Cove where you can see a rookery of harbor seals. On your way, be sure to stop here and there and see all the other wildlife between the cave and the Cove.

Of course, there are lots of seagulls:

It's also one of the best places in San Diego County to see and watch lots of pelicans:

You might even see some harbor seals that have broken away from the rookery. The pelicans and seagulls don't seem to mind:

On light pole #9, you can see an osprey. This is his light pole. I'm sure some day he will leave, but it seems like he has been perched there forever:

I'm not sure what this wildlife is:
