Named after the famous European city in Switzerland, Lucerne was once a popular vacation destination in the early 1900s. Lucerne has retained its turn-of-the-century charm and remains a well-known vacation and retirement locale. Several resorts and motels are on or near the lakeshore, offering access to water sports.

Two parks are located on Highway 20 in Lucerne. Alpine County Park has fishing, a playground, and a lake swimming area. Lucerne Clubhouse County Park features a clubhouse, picnic facilities, and lake swimming. The Parks department also maintains Lucerne Harbor County Park, off Highway 20. It has a boat launch ramp, a breakwater fishing pier, picnic facilities, and a playground for public use.
