I'd like to start by saying that my son plays Saxophone. So what is he doing playing the biggest drum in the band? He's tall and is a good sport.
This will be his second year in the Capistrano Valley High School Marching Band....one of the premier marching bands in Orange County. At the beginning of the summer, he was called into the band director's office along with the drum line coach.
He was convinced that he was going to be thrown out of band due to some offense having to do with drinking water and putting his instrument away too fast. (I'd like to make it VERY clear that our band director is fantastic and this was a ridiculous fear).
But instead....they scrutinized him for a bit, told him he had great rhythm (buttered him up) and asked him to take Base 5 for the season. This is the BIG drum!
He was game!
Now that we are midway into the Capistrano Valley High School Marching Band Summer Camp....the truth is coming out. As he lugged the huge drum around the field in the heat, the senior drum line members are telling him stories about all those that have come before him....attempting to carry the "load" and failed. Apparently the band director has not been able to keep a Base 5 for the whole season for more than 8 years.
We're on it!
Jacuzzi-neck massages-limited chores!
We are determined to help him go the distance. I'll keep you in the loop. I haven't seen this drum, we have a smaller version of the base drum at home, but I've heard about it. Can't wait for preview night on August 26th. I guess more accolades will be in order.
