What causes all the colors in a Sunset ?

As the sun was dropping from view, I wondered where these colors come from and I decided to look it up and I found the answer. And it is a bit complicated but in a nutshell, here is what I found. It is caused by the earth shadow. I thought that you might want to read the more complete answer so I have added the link here. I took this photo from the furthest point of the Ocean Beach Pier which is the longest pier on the West Coast.
