Bad news for Trestles surfers

If you leave a comment, Jim will visit your blog and comment. One of the best places for surfing here in California is a place called Trestles. The wave quality is considered "world class," and the crowd is mostly experienced surfers.

Trestles has never been easy to get to, mainly because it's in an isolated location of San Onofre State Beach, so roads and parking are limited. Most people going to Trestles have traditionally parked in a parking lot adjacent to Carl's Jr. off of Cristianitos Road (1023-C1 for Thomas Guide users). That's just the beginning of the journey, though, because then one has to carry one's surfboard for a 30-minute walk on a dirt trail, including navigating over, under, or on a heavily traveled, high-speed freeway; through bogs of mud and tall stands of reed; over the railroad tracks; and down to the sand. There you'll often find a beach and water that is overcrowded to say the least.

Surfing U.S.A.Recently the State of On-the-verge-of-bankruptcy-California, which owns the parking lot, started charging $15 for parking. Some surfing regulars are being optimistic, hoping that the parking fee helps thin out the crowds at Trestles. Others are worried that free beach use, which California has always been known for, might also come to an end.

Nonetheless, if you're coming to San Diego for the 2009 NAR Convention in November, and you're a surfer, feel free to stimulate our economy here in California by bringing your surfboard and checking out Trestles.

SurfersTo get to Trestles from San Diego, go north on Interstate 5 about 60 miles from downtown San Diego. Take the Cristianitos Road exit and turn right. When you see Carl's Jr., look for the parking lot next to it. You'll probably see a lot of people milling around with surfboards. Follow the surfboard crowd down to the beach.

While you're in the water, keep a lookout for urchins and mussels, both of which can be very sharp.
