Grandma got ran over by a reindeer? Well, I didn't see that but my husband came in the house yesterday bringing tidings of joyless words "I ran over my computer today."
I said "YOU WHAT?" Then he proceeded to tell me his story. He set his computer case down on the ground before he got in the car because he had to move some things out of the back seat. He suddenly remembered that he forgot something in the house and ran back in to get it. Somehow, the computer was out of sight and out of mind when he got in the car and turned the ignition on. Backing up he felt a bump... but said he didn't think anything of it at the time.
The computer was completely thrashed. We couldn't even retrieve anything from the hard drive.
My first feeling was FRUSTRATION.... how could he do something so STUPID? The computer was only about six months old! But, fortunately, before I said anything... I checked myself.... (wait a minute... have I done anything stupid like this?) Well, even though I couldn't think of anything, I thought it best to give it the benefit of the doubt and consider the 32 years we have been married. Surely there was SOMETHING I had done in 32 years HE would think stupid.
Come to think of it, the reason I can't remember MY stupid mistakes is because my husband never reminds me of them... he doesn't hold them over my head... and he has never brought them up in a fit of anger... there was the time years and years ago I wanted to sell Mary Kay... I spent $2000+ for the kit to get started... and never did anything with it. He never said anything to me about it... and when I brought it up out of guilt he consoled me and said "it just wasn't the right thing for you." Eventually, because of his persistent support and encouragement, I did find the "right thing" for me... that is being a Realtor!
There's nothing like a little reflection to help me with an attitude adjustment! After all, what will matter 10 years from now? A stupid computer or my relationship with my husband?
