Take a Walk on the Wild Side
Wildflowers abound here in the foothills, the Spring rains have brought carpets of color to the lower elevations. The warm days and cool evenings are perfect for these delicate blooms. There are some great places to take in the vibrant colors of the numerous wildflowers now filling the river canyons, mountains and mesas. Pack a picnic lunch and take a hike on some of the following trails to view poppies, blue dicks, Indian paintbrush, buckwheat and goldfield.
Table Mountain - Located off Shell Road in Jamestown. A trailhead is encountered at the first gate and first parking area. There is a trail on the right side of the gate which parallels a dirt road leading to a second parking area. The trail to the top of Table Mountain crosses the private road and parking area and leads
to the top.
Red Hills - Several trailheads are located off Red Hills Road, which runs between Highway 120 and La Grange Road. There is a parking area with trailheads on both sides of the road.
New Melones Reservoir - Tuttletown Recreation Area and Glory Hole Recreation Area are located off Highway 49 between Angels Camp and Sonora. Numerous hiking and biking trails are available.
Natural Bridges - Located off Parrotts Ferry Road near Vallecito. Look for the sign. The trail features wildflowers as well as a popular summer swimming area.
If you miss the wildflowers at these lower elevations, don't fret. The blooms will be out soon at the higher elevations and hang around through much of June. Look for the blooms of Dogwood trees and wild azaleas from Twain Harte to Pinecrest and beyond.
