Shelter Island in San Diego

Shelter Island in San Diego is one of the most beautiful spots in San Diego to view boats, the downtown horizon and the waterfront community. Although not actually an "island" because it is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land, Shelter Island was developed in the 1950s and has hotels, restaurants, marinas and beautiful public parks.

Shelter Island also is home to the "Tunaman's Memorial", a large life-like bronze sculpture by Franco Vianello which is dedicated to the courageous local tuna fishermen who were part of the legacy of tuna fishermen in San Diego. The marble plaque reads, "Tunaman's Memorial" - Honoring those that built an industry and remembering those that departed this harbor in the sun and did not return."
