Land lords and property managers need to be aware of a new California law requiring the installation of Carbon Monoxide smoke detectors in residential rental properties. The following text was taken from the Los Angeles Times:
"The bill requires that alarm devices, which can cost less than $30, to be installed in existing single-family homes that have a fossil-fuel burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage, starting in mid-2011. All other residential units will have to have the detectors in place by Jan. 1, 2013."
The legal review course I recently took advised land lords and managers to install the detectors according to individual packaging recommendations. Each CO detector will specify how and where it ought to be installed.
