Minimum $2000 Builders Fee
On July 1, 2008, homebuilders throughout San Diego county will have to ante up at least $2000 for each new home they construct. The $2000 minimum fee was passed as part of the TransNet measure by voters in 2004. Almost half of the jurisdictions in San Diego County passed that fee on back on 2004. Low and moderate house and condo conversions may qualify for fee exemptions.
TransNet Sales Tax Measure
The TransNet sales tax measure included this builder provision. We had extended the 1/2 cent sales tax increase for transportation improvements. Now is the time when all jurisdictions must approve the local fee program and ante up their share.

$2000 her and $2000 there are pretty soon, your're talking right out of range. This happened with impact fees around here. Homes got so expensive only the high incomes can qualify, the low incomes get subsidies and the middle is left to buy in the old neighborhoods.
It's called Urban Planning.
It is reported that the first 100,000 in construction costs fees here in san diego goes to city,county and in some form of fee. And they all complain that there is no affordable housing. How could their be? Reading skills beyond 6th grade level should be mandatory. It is the old expression of keeping on doing the same old thing and expecting different results. Not gonna happen.
I would say in 2004 they didn't anticipate 2008....Ouch!
William, this is nuts. It's only passed onto the consumer, which of course is yet another added dollar to their new home. The first 100K goes to fees? That's crazy.........guess they'll have to move to Arizona. ;-)

Hi Teri, These things just go on, no one seems to notice or cares and it just becomes part of the enormous cost of living here.
William, the sad part is that the builders will more than likely just increase the price of the property and pass it right on down to the buyer.
That is in fact what has happened with this right along. At some point there needs to be a recognition by consumers that these measures ( hidden taxes) can not continue. The government is taking in more revenue and it is becoming just a large employment agency. One in 4 are somehow benefitting from some form of income or employment. This is just nuts.
William - isn't that yet another example of the "Tax Them, Don't Tax Me" philosophy? It certainly does add to the cost of housing.
Hi Sharon, I think this country , the people and the government have expanded entitlements to the point that there is no other choice than to give with one hand and take back with the other. It is out of control and regrettably, the bell can't be un-ring. I would take some powerful leadership and a consensus for an extended period of time to straighten it all out. I don't believe the needed consensus even exists any more. So the short answer is we will have to do the best we can. The longer term answer is not nearly so optimistic. Resolve with a capital R and that doesn't seem to be there at this time.
