Tip for blending new and old carpet!

We recently Staged a home where the seller had to replace a damaged area of carpet with an old remnant he had left over from when the job had originally been done. It had been YEARS since the carpet had been replaced and as you can see in the photo below the remnant piece was several shades lighter than the rest of the carpet.

Hmmm. what to do?

My assistant came up with a brilliant idea. She went into the garden and got some dirt. We rubbed the dirt into the new part of the carpet, concentrating on the hard edge where they met, so the new would match the old . It took several tries to get it right and it wasn't perfect (hence the idea of putting throw pillows there too), but you can see to the right of the pillows that you can hardly notice the difference.

One thing to beware of is small rocks. We ended up hand picking out tiny white rocks that came in with the dirt so shoot for relatively clean soil.

This seller was amazed at the results and didn't mind us getting his carpet a little dirty in the process!
