China's Terra Cotta Warriors are on display in Orange County, CA. That's right, it's an amazing exhibit at the spectacular Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, CA. The Bowers Museum in is only one of two or three museums in the U.S. to exhibit these amazing finds. It's hard to believe but these artifacts were buried for almost 2,000 years! They were found by accident as recently as the 1974 by Chinese farmers who discovered heads while digging a well. For me personally it was/is a once-in-a-lifetime experience seeing something like this. A truly spectacular experience.
Commissioned by the first Chinese Emperor, over 7,000 life-size warriors were created to guard the emperor into eternity. In addition to the warriers, animals including full size horses, birds and others were also created.
The photo on the left if only a replica stationed outside the exhibit. Photograph was not permitted inside, so click on this line to get a better view for yourself.
If you're near Orange County, you only have a few more weeks to experience this event. Click here for ticket info. I've traveled to China twice in the past few years (the Great Wall was on my lifetime-list) yet this was a first for me. I'd heard about them yet didn't see them while there. I hope to see others on a return visit to Asia some day. Or if you're lucky enough to be in Houston, TX that's the next stop, then on to Washington, DC in late 2009. After that it's back to China for these extraordinary artifacts.

Lynda
That was an amazing feat for back then. I read they even had horses and other artifacts as well. The size of that find must have been unreal.
Sincerely

This is an amazing exhibit, Lynda. They had just discovered the first pit when I was in Turkey in '74. I have always wanted to see them in person.... it would be amazing.
Lynda,
WoW, amazing. 7000 of them? Imagine they lay buried all those years.....I can't wait to see them when they come to Canada.
Thanks so much for posting about this astounding exhibit.
Jo
Hi Tom ~ Yes you're right. It was absolutely un-real!
Jesse ~ You're right, it was absolutely amazing.
Jo-Anne ~ Be sure to look for it when it's there.
I love artifacts and I watched this show! Beautiful, astounding and amazing....and to think you get to see them!!!
Hi Sally ~ This was an amazing presentation.
Lynda - what an amazing exhibit. I would love to find the time to get up there to view it. We saw a Chinese exhibit at a well-known museum in Sao Paulo, Brazil a few years ago that was incredible - this reminds me of that wonderful time we enjoyed. What an opportunity to be able to view these artifacts.
Jeff
Hi Jeff ~ Oh if you can, be sure to see this. I think it's been extended to 9/18.
I'm glad you explained that the photo was of a replica - it didn't look like what I'd expect of a 2,000 year old statue - but when I clicked on the museum link, then the statues looked really old.
Hi Sharon~ Yes, you're right. Plus visitors keep their distance to preserve these artifacts. Many of them were broken and in pieces. Some have been restored and others are in the new found condition from the 70's.
