When the air turns cool and with Autumn just around the corner and the foliage begins to turn to bright orange, red and yellow, we have a place in San Diego where we can celebrate the fall harvest of Apples. There's nothing that says Autumn like the beautiful and crisp fall foliage and the local sweet and succulent apples. Bring the family and come on over to another one of the treasures of San Diego County to the scenic mining town of Julian and experience their annual apple harvest festival. This wonderful and quaint town specializes in homemade apple pies, cider, art shows and entertainment through out the whole community. Speaking of pies, my favorite is the apple and boysenberry pie that is so amazing in taste that I usually can't wait to get it home and I have to order at least one slice while there.
There is also a local winery doing wine tastings that would please any palate. There are numerous roadside stands that offer varieties of fresh local apples, pears and the homemade cider that is nothing short of the 'nectar of the gods'. That term was reserved for fine wines but when you taste the cider, I think you will agree that it is like nothing you have experienced from commercial offerings.
One of the really enjoyable features of visiting Julian is to be able stay in one of the numerous bed and breakfast inns and enjoy the various activities in the surrounding park lands and especially the food. You will never guess what is featured on the desert menus. Did I stump you? Apple Pies served hot, cold, ala mode or anyway you would like them. Julian offers hiking, biking, canoeing, horseback riding and plenty more things to do including shopping. With the holidays coming soon, it could be your chance to pick those unique and one of kind items only found in Julian and give someone on your shopping list a real treat. Just a block this side of the downtown area is an amazing town cemetery that has a view out over the valley.
Each year, we have a special weekend planned in October called Julian Apple Days Festival, October 4th and 5th. This special weekend is full of fun for the whole family with apples on displays, apple treats and people coming from all over just to experience the apples and the fall festival. Last year, I noticed that many of the displays offered everyone a chance to experience the apples for free. There are many townsfolk dressed in period costumes and add so much local flavor to the festivities and there is even a horse and carriage ride that will delight the whole family.

William, any festival that has wine tasting I am there. What a great event. Loved the slide show with the music.
I love that slide show and presentation. Very professional.
Love apples too. My favorite fruit. Many of our local orchards have roadside stands. The fruit doesn't taste at all the way an apple does in June from cold storage.
I grw up in Yuma, and have been to the Apple Festival many times. Your post took me back.
I love your local area posts with your slide shows William! Apple pie? You are definitely an apple for our eyes!
William - what a nice reflection on Julian. We make an annual trek each year to pipck apples adn grad a Julain pie, a throwback to many years in teh Boston area where apple picking is, well, a major event, almost as popular as the leaf peeping tours. We were just tlaking about the need to get out there and enjoy this quaint town. Alsa, not this weekend, but I actually prefer going when it is less crowded. The apple and boysenberry is a favorite of mine, too.
Jeff
Hello Gary, I feel like I have been away for years and it has been but weeks. I missed everyone and coming back to AR has been rife with mixed emotions and a sense of awkwardness.
Thanks for noticing my return and commenting. The music selection was more to do with me retruning than perhaps the post itself though it works for most that have no idea I have been away for almost a month,:-)
Hi Lenn, So nice of you to comment. You are so right about the taste of fresh versus the cold storage taste from commercial growers. When growing up we had several large trees of differnt varieties and one of favorites was the sour green apples. They made one pucker and I used to get a beelly ache and would still eat them at every chance. There was something so tempting and wonderful about spotting the one that I would climb up the tree to get at.
Reflecting back on these experiences makes me wish I could re-experience them. Memories, seems I have a lot of them.
Hi Leslie, Thank you for commenting and how wonderful this brings you back. I am happy that your memories have come to life through this little montage.
Hi Sally, Many Thanks for your wonderful message in your comment. I have missed you and the rest. I struggled to get a post out. As I mentioned to Gary, the music I selected is more about me returning than just the post. One of the cool things about Slide is being able to have the music run while making my reply comments.
Well, it is good to "Come Back ". And your comment makes it all the more satisfying.
Hi Jeff, It is certainly special there. For those of us who come from back East, it does bring back memories of our past as much as it acquaints us with the part of Autumn not usually seen by most of Southern California.
There is something 'Americana' about apple pies and the Autumn and the old town look that creates a secure happy feeling inside of us. With all that transpired the past few weeks, it is good to go there and take in the sensual pleasures that get so misplaced in out daily hectic lives.
Thanks for dropping by Jeff.
Hi William,
Loved this showcase of Julien. Marlene and I were there again about six weeks ago, but you've showed me several things I think we missed. Great slide show and loved the music, it tugs at your heart. As for the B&B's, yes another great find.
Glad to see you my friend!
William- I was wondering where you were and see you were off having fun in Julian...love it there. It really brings all the good in me out :) Nice showcase....
William - So good to see your post. Thanks so much for the great music and beautiful photos. Lynda and I took a day trip to Julian just a few weeks ago. Can you believe I'd never been there before?! It's one of the prettiest pieces of God's handiwork here in Southern California!
William--Love the presentation of Julian's Apple Festival...It looks like a wonderful place to visit. I would be jealous if I hadn't just made apple crisp last night...first of the year, with apples right off the tree. Yum! That boysenberry pie sounds great too...Glad to see you back again!
William,
Watched it several times, loved the slideshow, admired the song, envied your apple pies, though I would prefer them not hot, don;t blame for taking one on the spot.
Terrific post. Welcome back
Hi William,
Good to see you again and an excellent slide show and now my mouth is watering for some warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Yummmy!
Hi Lynda, I must have left right before your comment. I went out to select decorative accessories to finish off staging a townhome that I list the first of the week. Marlene called and said she saw the post and it was great being able to say hello. I sent my regards to you as well.
Julian is a little treasure hidden in the back country and once you there is just so wonderful. There are only about 300 townspeople there. I asked about and a shop keeper said that all the room there was in the cemetery. I presume she was kidding but??
She mentioned that she was 3rd generation and thought that it would end with her as her son and daughter had no interest in carrying on the family tradition. Suppose that is the way it is in many other places as well. Small towns seem to be the place some seek out after getting tired of the pace in the city.
As much as I love San Diego, I understand why others might seek other places ,especially with the cost of living getting so disproportionate as compared to some other choices.
Thanks for your sweet note and comment, Lynda. I will make my way over to your blog in a bit.
Good to see you back. It sounds like a great town, and a fun annual get away.
Richard
Hi Kathy, Been away from Ar for a few weeks and then found it difficult to get back into the swing of it. Nice to be back and thanks for coming by. Always nice to see you again.
Hi Marlene, It was great speaking with you today. It was fun to catch up a it. Finished getting all the accessories today for the staging of the listing Monday. I have the property nearly completed and ready for photos on Monday. It was fun double tasking today. You always make me smile and that is the best mood to be in when selecting things. Thanks again for the call and for dropping by.
I mentioned that the music choice was sort of more about me coming back to AR than just the post but works both ways thankfully.
Hi Teri, How are you? Thanks for your wonderful private note. Things are getting back to some normalcy and it was nice to have something for posting on AR so I could return with a post. I have been sort of avoiding it, not sure if I even wanted to return. I have some communities I am sponsoring and I have neglected those as well. No big rush I suppose as business has really slowed up .
It is always wonderful to hear from you and I will try and get over with some comments on your posts tomorrow. I have missed a lot in the 3 or weeks I have been absent.
Always,
William
Hi Jon, I prefer mine cold as well. I don't even like it at room temperature. :-) Thanks for coming by. I am glad I found my way back to the AR group and it was so nice of you to send me a private note. It was very much appreciated, Jon. The music starts over with each reply. It is cool to have music to listen to while I compose my thoughts of appreciation.
Hi Cynthia, I will bring you some back. I expect to be back there in the next couple weeks so I will be things about you. Thanks for the welcome back. It felt like months not weeks and I almost lost my ranking for California. I expect I can write myself back though it will take some time. Can you believe the holidays are coming again. Seems I just put the decorations away. Where does the time go.
Anyway, it is nice to be back and especially nice to hear from friends like you. Thanks again Cynthia.
Hi Richard. Thanks for your note and I really appreciate your every kindness. Julian so delightful and makes long for the quieter days of childhood. Then reality sets in and we laugh and enjoy the memories. I suppose they are best as memories that way we can remember what we like and forget all the rest. Nice to see you again, Richard.
WEll....I was going to scold you...but I'm too glad to see you. I was going to email but I felt you had some sadness to work through and need some alone time.
Don't EVER feel awkward about coming back...you are loved here!
Hi Joan, Glad to be back. It surely did feel awkward today But that is done now and I am ready to move on and catch up. I will drop over to your posts soon and leave some comments so you know I am really back. I wrote over a dozen posts none of which I put up so I guess I will edit them add some photos and get with it again. Mostly local stuff but I did do one from a newspaper article about well known bloggers. I suppose we would have to become a lot more controversial to get that status. Anyway, I thought of you so many times. Thanks for always being so supportive. You are a wonderful friend.
Well, if Lenn Harley comments on it, it must be a good local content post!
William - Welcome back, I have missed seeing your comments all over.
What an inviting post card - you have a way with your presentations - I can smell fresh apples.
Hi William, loved your show. Nice to see you. XXOO.
Excellent post and great slide show William!
That sounds like it would be a fabulous weekend. Having lived in California many years ago, I know there are so many interesting attractions. Hope you enjoy those apples.

Hi Virgina, Glad to be back and back in the groove. You are so kind to notice my absence. Thank you for the compliment and hope the post provided a bit of enjoyment. The music is a fun new addition for me.
William: Congrat's on a well deserved Localism Featured post. I hate to admit it, but I haven't made it to Julian, yet and I am so close. Huell Howser did a piece on it (or I saw an old show he did) and I TOLD myself I was going there.
what an awesome post! I've used slide.com in the past but never have seen this "postcard" style, I'll have to copy you, it's that good.
Maria
Hi Susie, Thank you, it is so nice to see you as well. I missed you all. I will get over to look at some of your amazing photo posts and see what's doing in your neck of the woods.
Hi Judy, thank you so much for dropping by. Hope you enjoyed this.
William~ Loved the show! How did you do that? You did a great job! Thanks for sharing it with us. I bet the people in San Diego appreciate it too!
Hi Diane, Thanks for dropping by. Glad to be back and you are so right, there is just seemingly an endless supply of little treasures in San Diego take in.
Happy Sunday Missy. Thank you and glad to be back. Doing fine thanks and life moves on and bring with the new joys from memories past.
Hi Linda, Thank You. Don't feel bad, I lived here in San Diego for a lot of years before I went to Julian. Then I couldn't believe that something so wonderful never quite got onto my priority list. One of the cool things about blogging, is that he helps force you to get out and experience these things so that you have these special treasures to share with an online audience.
Real Estate agents that blog have so much more of what is important in life to share with consumers. Unless one is focused there, these things never get shared. Remeber back when before blogging. Hardly any conversation would have gone on about local festivals. But they are some of the wonderful things we spend our time in life on and so they would be appropriate to share with others .
Thanks for sharing this and hope your husband enjoys as well.
Hello Theresa, WOW, thank you so much for the wonderful compliment. It was fun putting it together. We are indeed blessed with so much in our country. All these small historic towns also remind us of how life was in our earlier times and we need to preserve them for younger generations and keep encouraging people to support them so the remain a identifiable part of our history.
Hi Judy- Thank you so much for dropping by and the wonderful compliment.
Love this post it looks so well layed out and the music and pictures are awesome. Great job , congratulations
Hi Jeff, Thank You Jeff. I'll be sure to go over and take a look. That was so nice of you to do that. Many Thanks again.
Hi Sharon, it's good to be back. You will love this wonderful little town!
Hi Neal, It was just what the doctor ordered. A delightful experience that makes one feel good inside. Thanks for dropping by.
William ... that was a wonderful slide show & music ... it gave me goose bumps!
HiWilliam, As a Michigan transplant I have many fond memories of the season turning to Fall. I have also been to Julian and was hoping you would have a picture of " Dudley's ". Thanks for the fun trip.
Bill, I just loved this. Thank you so much for taking me there too! Great music too.
Later in the rain~Deb
Although I have been to San Diego and surrounding areas, I never have been to Julian. It certainly is a lovely place. I love this time of year and all the fall festivals. We have a lot of apple orchards in Nashua and Hollis and I am looking forward to all the autumn events. Thanks for the tour and the slide show.
Hi William-I know you don't recognize this name(Pat Preston) but I was just one of your many commenters on your tribute to your beautiful CeCe and I subscribe to your blog so I knew you hadn't blogged since then, til now. This might sound strange coming from a stranger but I was worried about you and wondered how you were doing so I'm glad you're back to blogging. It is so hard to lose a pet because they are so very much one of the "family". They are, our fur babies and the pain is real and it hurts a lot. You just have to take one day at a time and some days will be better ones and other ones will be very hard as something will trigger a memory of CeCe and that raw emotion will come flooding back. I know that feeling so well, as I lost my angel Amanda "a blue pom" three years ago and even now the memory of her makes me sad and makes me cry. I just recently posted a blog about her and that had a lot to do with your blog about CeCe. Thank you again with sharing her with us.
Now I want to comment on this awesome blog. I love fresh apple cider, straight from the cider mill and fresh apple pie(ala mode). Those two are the best. I love this song. I had never heard it before now and I've been listening to it as I write this comment. Needless to say I'm a long commenter and the song has played thru several times. So thank you for sharing this beautiful taste of autumn with us. I wish you all the best in your blogging and I hope as the time passes you'll smile more when you think of CeCe and it will hurt a little less each day when you think of her. It won't be easy I know but she will live on in your heart forever. Take care of yourself. Bye for now
Great job William!
I can see why that was a featured blog!
Thank you for sharing.
William, how great is this? Great information and a spectacular song. I love it. Very nice job!
