Savvy Seniors Succeed On-Line ~ Seniors Search the Web

SRES Senior Real EstateSeniors Getting Connected for On-Line Real Estate Results~

It's reported that 87% of today's home buyers begin their home search on-line and seniors are included in that number.

So when it comes to seniors age sixty-two or older it's important to understand the distinctions between those on-line and others who are not. As a long-time REALTOR, and a Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) senior real estate has become one of the pillars of my business. I love is working with seniors, those over the age of 55 and their families.

In a recent survey AARP reported that approximately one-third of seniors are currently on-line. And interestingly enough there are some significant differences among seniors connected to the Internet vs. those that are not.

These are the facts of those seniors who are on-line vs. those who not:

  • Seniors on-line are better educated than those who are not. 75% have some college vs. 42%.
  • Seniors on-line report significantly higher incomes, (actually more than double) $55,000 vs. $27,000 for those not on-line.
  • Seniors on-line are more likely to be married (not sure what this says about anyone, but oh well?) 70% vs. 48% of those who are not.
  • Seniors on-line are more likely to be working (guess that's where the higher income comes into focus) it's 26% vs. 13% of those not on-line. ***
  • Seniors on-line have higher household expenditures about 40% higher than those who are not.

So with these statistics in mind, I did a little survey of my own, actually a re-cap of a half dozen closings so far for 2008 involving seniors. My own mini senior survey results:

  1. On-line senior, sold a SoCal home and moved to a senior community out of state. This senior located her new home development on-line and was referred to me by the out-of-state-REALTOR.
  2. Senior not on-line, sold a SoCal home and moved into a nearby senior community where she is the belle of the ball and is now actually featured in advertising for the community. This seller was not on-line, yet her two daughters were both on-line and helped through the process.
  3. Three familieshired me this year to assist with estate sales, those of a loved one that passed on. As a Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) we're educated to meet the needs of families when it comes to working with estates and trusts. All three families were on-line.SRES
