Seniors Getting Connected for On-Line Real Estate Results~
It's reported that 87% of today's home buyers begin their home search on-line and seniors are included in that number.
So when it comes to seniors age sixty-two or older it's important to understand the distinctions between those on-line and others who are not. As a long-time REALTOR, and a Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) senior real estate has become one of the pillars of my business. I love is working with seniors, those over the age of 55 and their families.
In a recent survey AARP reported that approximately one-third of seniors are currently on-line. And interestingly enough there are some significant differences among seniors connected to the Internet vs. those that are not.
These are the facts of those seniors who are on-line vs. those who not:
So with these statistics in mind, I did a little survey of my own, actually a re-cap of a half dozen closings so far for 2008 involving seniors. My own mini senior survey results:

Lynda--It's great to see seniors embracing technology. When my husband's grandfather moved to MN for hospice care about a decade ago he was the only senior in the nursing home with his own computer and internet connection. Even though he was losing his eyesight, he had special magnifying glasses and his screen set to extra large print so he could communicate with out of town friends and surf the web. He even had a web-cam to send photos. The nursing staff was impressed as at the time, the internet wasn't in everyone's home quite yet. He was in his 80's and never stopped learning! It is good that so many more seniors are staying connected with family and friends via the internet...And staying on top of so many issues without having to leave home. Great post!

Hi, Lynda... Interesting stats on the seniors market. This is certainly a growing market and one folks would do well to pay attention to. I'm not quite there yet (closer than I care to admit) but there are different/special needs that really are important to consider. Great post, btw.

I think you and I have discussed that Jack and I helped start the SeniorHelpline for the Area Agency on Aging in mid -1990s and your post brings up so many great points.
We actually found we replaced "seniors" with "retirees" (lol)and yet as you point out many of these vibrant individuals are working longer (and many on their own terms) so maybe we need a new term - lol.
If people haven't worked with people in this stage of life they don't understand the special needs and emotional considerations - now even more as we see pressures on many of the people in this segment feeling the effects of our national financial markets. Havings you, as a specialist, will certainly be a huge help and most of all give all involved "peace of mind" - which is so important.

Hi Lynda - Interesting statistics for seniors looking for Real Estate in your area. I have not had the chance to work with that many. I am wonder how the age bracket treats the internet out here on the East Coast. I suspect it is probably pretty similiar.
Hello Lynda, those are some great demographic facts for the on-line Senior community looking for real estate assistance. I know a lot of retirees are looking to our market here from other states as we have no state income tax, combined with great weather! Facts we use in our marketing efforts. Best of success. John
Lynda - somehow I missed this the other day, but glad I found it. It just provides more evidence that we cannot and should not make assumptions about who is using the Internet and how. More often than not we may be wrong. Any senior in your area will know that you are the go-to person to help them with their real estate needs. Well done.

Terrific post and so helpful! I, too, am a SRES. Still a newbie (just finished my first transaction last month!) I'm in the process of trying to determine if working with seniors is really my niche, or if I'd like it as my niche. I do enjoy seniors. I have a nice re pore with most and visit my local Senior Center on occasion. (I'm in Orange, CA. We're practically neighbors!) My first buyers weren't seniors, though the house they bought was for my buyers' mother.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for sharing. Gives me pause and some things to think about.... =)

I agree the senior community is a special interest group. I will say this that those seniors that embrace the new technology -----they are without a doubt full of enthusiasm and do it with a lot of zest, but unfortunately I have worked with many that are not and do not want to deal with computers --- many would not even think of going on line to do their banking. Many seniors that I have worked with have relatives that are assisting them with searches and choosing the real estate agent that they will work with.
Lynda - We are SRES and work and live in a very active retirement/second home community. We work because we enjoy it - for the same reason we blog! (I worked 31 years in education - retired - got licensed - went to work with Bruce who was a life-long REALTOR.) We find the retirement community is not all seniors but that most of the seniors are senior in age only. Since we are part of the group, we don't look at it as a special interest group. Being senior or retired has nothing to do with participation in life including in technology with the folks we work with. Most are very savvy users of multiple kinds of technology. Marketing to this age group is changing daily! Maybe 2% of the people who make contact with us are not email and internet users. Most have found us online. They use technology for a purpose but don't focus their lives around it because they have better things to do - golfing, boating, volunteer activities, church, children, grandchildren, etc.

I definitely agree that even with the seniors, you have to be online. Like you said, many times, if the senior is not online, their kids are online helping. We do a lot of work in adult communities in our area, and the large majority of leads we get are from the Internet in some way.
