today was the ground breaking ceremony for construction of the new Sanctuary for St. John Fisher Church in Rancho Palos Verdes at the corner of Crest and Crenshaw. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles, which oversees local parishes, recently gave its approval for work to start on the new 17,000-square-foot sanctuary with a 74-foot lighted cross.

The church, established in 1961, will use its current sanctuary for an athletic and community center, and several other buildings will be torn down or modified. Construction is expected to cost $20 million take about 14 months, church officials said.
