Taken at the ice cream social held at the Heritage House in Riverside, CA today. Bet you can't guess what this guy's cooking up? What do you think?

a good picnic lunch .. of hot dogs maybe
Is he cooking directly on the flame? I don't see a grate or anything.
It makes me wonder; should there be any cooking at an ice cream social?
Wow, you got me on this one. Being an ice cream social, I would not think to bring the grill. Thanks and I can't wait to see the results, Jim
Tell me it's not a squirrel!
I think he's just playing with fire:) When he was a little boy, he liked to play with matches. Now, as a grown up, he continues tradition:)
Ice cream, of course!
Heather,
My guess is that this is a forge and that he's a blacksmith. :)
Steve
He probably could roast hot dogs on that thing, Eric. But, that's not it.
Yes, Donna. He uses the flame directly (without a grate).
Maybe, Christine. They did serve more than just ice cream.
This was actually in the back with vintage cars from the 20's and before, Jim. There were also musicians, artists and authors there as well.
Rest assured, Mara. It most definitely was NOT a squirrel! :)
He may have grown up playing with matches, Joanna. I never thought to ask. Darn it!
I think that would make it cream soup instead of ice cream, Marianne.
You're on the right track, Steve.
Heather - I have no idea what he is heating up. Looking at the anvilnext to him it is something he will be forging. It could be a horseshoe.
Well, it is something he is forging, Robert. Look very closely at the photograph. It's right there.
Heather, haven't a clue...

Hi Heather- I keep looking but I don't have any idea and I looked until my eyeballs hurt. <SMILE>
You DO have a clue, Michael. It's right in the photograph.
Hi, Sharon. The clue is right in the photo. You don't have to make your eyeballs hurt. :)
Heather
He's getting ready for the 4th of July cook out! I'll take one of those burgers please.
Connie Lou
I don't know if you'd want to eat burgers on this grill, Connie Lou. I'm just sayin'. :)
Hmmm...is he working with metal? He just doesn't look like he is grilling food.... :)
He's "cooking" up something, Michael & Cheron. But it isn't food. The clue is in the photo. Look close.
OK EVERYONE - HERE'S THE ANSWER:
This gentleman uses this old fashioned way to heat up his instruments to bend steel into wrought iron fencing (like the one at the bottom of the foreground of the photo). He had a whole array of old fashioned tools next to him that he used in forging and forming the metal into unique shapes that ultimately become wrought iron. It takes hours of work, years of experience and TONS of patience. Thanks for all the interest.
It was fun Heather. Thanks for the challenge...but have you ever had Baked Alaska? It's ice cream that gets covered with meringue and bake! It was just a thought.
I have had Baked Alaska, actually, Marianne. I never understood how it was put together until I saw it done on Gordon Ramsay's British cooking show recently. Glad you enjoyed the challenge.
Okay, so I was a little close to the answer...:)
Yes, you were, Michael and Cheron. I couldn't fool you with the title! :)
