Land Park Has Fast Growing Fast-Food Chains

subway sandwichI bring home take-out a lot, and not just because my new range and oven is sitting in my living room during the remodel. Basically, it's a time-related issue. I rarely have time to cook, especially during the week, plus my husband is the actual in-house cook. And some nights he gets home from work totally exhausted to find me sitting in front of my computer yelping about where's my dinner! So, he drives over to Broadway and brings home Pad Thai from Taste of Thai or Scallops in Lobster sauce from Fortune House.

However, I don't have the patience to wait in a restaurant for take-out, so I generally order from L&L Hawaiian BBQ or go to Quiznos or Subway. Turns out that I am not alone. In today's Sacramento Bee, reporter Phillip Reese says take-out places have jumped 28% in the Sacramento metro area over the past six years. In 2005, there were 2 L&L Hawaiian BBQ joints and now there are 9. I lean toward the fried shrimp, which used to cost $3.99 and now has jumped closer to $5, but still, it's a bargain and yummy.

Next door to L&L Hawaiian BBQ is Quiznos. Both of these restaurants are located about 8 blocks from my home in Land Park, so it's a quick trip to pick up a fast meal. Quiznos, says the Sac Bee, has grown from 17 stores in 2005 to 30 today. If you never drive past Riverside, you may not spot these two restaurants, as they're tucked away in a newer strip mall between Broadway and X Street, across from the gas station and kitty corner to Target.

To make up for the calorie count in the fried shrimp at L&L Hawaiian BBQ, I sometimes order the Honey Bourbon Chicken on an oven-toasted bun at Quiznos. It's only 320 calories. But not if you buy a chocolate chip cookie to go with it. :)

Elizabeth, my wife and I are like you and your husband with the nutritious take out places. We find some good categories of Thai and Chinese food as well as for lunches the healthy chicken type sub sandwiches. It's not as hard as people make it out to be as long as you stay away from the burger joints. It sure is convenient when you run out of time in your day.

Your picture makes me hungry.  Subs are my favorite.  Even on Weight Watchers, a foot long is only 10 points---at least the last time I checked.  Of course that is on whole wheat with no cheese or mayo....  I am sure realtors wind up eating out more often than any other segment of the population!

Nothing healthier than fast food. Isn't that synonymous with angioplasty?

Hey, pick up the phone and call me sometime on one of my cell numbers at  at 262-377-1459 or 916-960-7437.

I have a question and favor of you.

How do you maintain that youth look? You look like you just got out of college? I turn my head and it adds another pound, wrinkle, and more.

I hope all is well neighbor.

Sincerely

The one and only, often mistaken, but never forgotten.

Have a productive day buddy!

Hi Gary: We aren't always health conscious. Although we do shop at the Sacramento Co-Op and Taylor's Market, there are those nights that my eyes will catch the evil glint in my husband's: Pizza? We often order from Round Table on Freeport Blvd. But there's also Chicago Fire in midtown, which is excellent.

Hi Pat: I often order the turkey on wheat with mustard, no mayo.

Hi Tom: How do I stay young looking, you ask? It's easy.  I don't have any kids! :) Hey, I called -- your turn.

Elizabeth - If you buy a diet soda to go with it, it somehow negates the other calories.  At least, that's what I've heard...  :)

Elizabeth, ok I confess, I pick up at our close in Dominos Pizza on occasion. We all have to have our vices. ; ) My wife eats the crusts as a snack.

Elizabeth, L&L sounds like an interesting place!  Wish they'd open a place here!

Elizabeth, with a line up like that I am so going to love visiting with you! I am in foodie paradise! Yay! :-)

Like your trophy hubby... I'm the chef and there are days I just don't feel like it.  There's a little Thai place right down from our office that has the best most scrumptuous pad thai I've ever tasted.

Btw, I totally agree with Debi... a diet coke negates the calories in the cookie. :)

Hi Debi: Oh, yeah? Well, I heard if you eat over the kitchen sink, you don't consume any calories, whatsoever.

Hi Gary: Dominos? Is that the best you can for pizza in Texas? I feel for you. :)

Hi Patricia: You might already have an L&L Hawaiian BBQ. Nope, you don't; I checked. Only New York. The rest of the locations are west of the Mississippi.

Hi C: So when are you coming? Yes, Land Park is foodie paradise, but not because of the fast-food joints. We have a marvelous string of ethnic restaurants along Broadway as well as a few others scattered throughout the neighborhood. Probably my favorite is New Canton for dim-sum on Sunday.

Hi Jesse: I think it also depends on the size of the cookie. You know those humongous ones? The ones that are bigger than your head, just so you can say, "But I ate ONLY one!"

Elizabeth - LOL!  How about eating the cookie over the kitchen sink with the diet soda?  That way we've covered all the bases...  :)

Elizabeth,  Is that picture a sandwich from Quizno's on your kitchen table?  I must confess that I do not like that Quizno's.  The workers behind the counter have not been too impressive.  I have not tried L & L but I will soon.  I like both Subways on Freeport, (Turkey on wheat with mustard, but today I had no mustard and had oil  and vinegar, it was better!) but am a sucker for the chocolate chip cookies.

Hi Debi: I think the new rules say you've got to eat the cookie in your car to qualify for zero calories.

Hi Robert: Naw, that's just a photo of a sandwich. Quiznos are much better because they are toasted. The newer staff at Quiznos seems to be more responsive than its earlier employees. In fact, I got the impression that one of them was the owner. They also have a fairly decent Cobb salad. And at least two different soups of the day.

Elizabeth - LOL!  Okay, I guess I just can't keep up with all the NEW rules...  :)

Debi: Sure you can. You just make them up as you go along. That's what I do!
