The Golden Bear in Sacramento was on TV - and deservedly!
Did anyone happen to catch the show "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" on TV recently? This program features sometimes little known eating establishments around the country that might not look like much as you drive by, but those who know better know that there is some fantastic food inside!
In the past, some Sacramento spots like Squeeze Inn (with their skirted cheeseburgers) have been featured. A few days ago I caught an episode which included The Golden Bear, on 23rd Street in midtown Sacramento.
If you haven't been to The Golden Bear in a few years, you need to take another look. While it still looks old on the outside and the porch is still slightly off-kilter, the inside has been renovated, the kitchen has doubled in size, and they have a great new chef, 20-something Billy Zoellin.
This place has been a favorite local pub for years, and they still are a great place to stop for a drink. While food may have been secondary concern, that is no longer the primary draw for many of their customers (including me). I'm not really a drinker, except for an occasional glass of wine or a margarita once or twice a year, but I am an eater!
You won't find any tired dishes on this menu. The selection is full of surprises, including some healthy options that you would swear were full of those things your doctor doesn't want you to have! And they are delicious! And the prices will surprise you too. Very reasonable.
Have you ever had a club sandwich with duck comfit in place of bacon? Or a pizza (sausage and smoked slaw pizzetta) that has no cheese and no sauce, even though you would swear it had both if you closed your eyes? These are two of the menu favorites. And try the mac and cheese - an old favorite, but just a bit better. Or the Juicy Lucy burger.
One of the interesting parts of the TV show was seeing how Zoellin makes everything from scratch, including even roasting and grinding dry chili peppers to make the rub for his amazing chicken tacos. You won't see any sauces or rubs from cans or jars - they are all his inventions. And he tries to use local produce as much as possible.
If you want to have a great brunch, lunch or dinner, check out The Golden Bear at 2326 K Street, Sacramento 95816. Their bar is open from 3pm-2am Monday through Friday and 10 am -2 am on weekends. The kitchen is open from 11:30 am -1 am weekdays and 10 am - 1 am on weekends.
