I was astonished to read in the paper this morning that we in Sacramento are paying more for gas than we really should.
Apparently, gas pumps are supposed to deliver gas at 60 degrees, because that's what the prices are based on -- 60-degree gas. However, a state study says our gas averages 72 degrees per year, and in August, it's 82 degrees! One month, the gas registered at 92 degrees in Sacramento.
The California Energy Commission says gas expands 1% for every 15 degrees. At a buck-ninety-nine, that's not a big deal. But with gas prices over $4.00 a gallon, it quickly adds up.
Warmer gas costs us more money. Fortunately, the state legislature may look into this based on a recommendation by the California Energy Commission. But you know what that would mean, right? If all the gas stations are forced to update their pumps with temperature gauges for the gas, it will be expensive. And the gas stations owners would surely pass this expense on to us, the consumers.
It just doesn't seem fair, does it?

That's a new one for me. I never thought of the degrees of gas and it costing more! I hate this escalation of prices in everything, don't you?
Elizabeth, this technical discussion might imply that in states where the average temperature is lower (depending on the price of gas locally of course) that those folks are getting the better deal. Yes, any new monitoring gizmos added on, the price of those babies will go straight to the consumer. You can't win.

Hi Gary: Maybe not, though. Because gas is kept in underground, double-walled tanks that act like a thermos, so it's always hot. It arrives hot, too. But what do I know. I slept through chemistry.

There's just no winning is there? Darned if you do and darned if you don't. Somehow those little numbers on the pump seem to whiz by at lightening speed in the dead of winter just as fast as they do in May.

Hi Jesse: I fill up twice a month because I don't drive very far and I get good mileage. It doesn't matter too much to me what gas costs.
Elizabeth, it just depends - in Arizona - from where the gas is piped in. AND we're probably hotter than you are in Sac. We're down in the $3.70 range here, and my daughter - in Southern California - said she's still paying $4.06!! Having grown up in Arizona, it seems like it has always been less here than in California. ;-)
