Sometimes, random news deserves bigger play.
Our local news media loves to pound the San Diego real estate market, but all to often glosses over our healthy economy and the fact that San Diego has become a world class destination (remember Golf’s U.S. Open plays San Diego’s Torrey Pines in 2008?)
For the fourth straight year, Hotwire.com has listed the Top 10 Destinations for New Year’s Eve–and for the first time, San Diego makes that list with the #6 spot, pushing Las Vegas to #9.
Other newcomers to the Top 10 Destinations include Dallas-Fort Worth (#7), Newark (#8) and Toronto (#10).
Oddly missing from this list are New York, New Orleans and Miami. (???)
The complete list, with prior year’s ranking in parentheses, is shown below:
1. Chicago (1)
2. Orlando (3)
3. Atlanta (2)
4. Los Angeles (7)
5. San Francisco (5)
6. San Diego
7. Dallas-Fort Worth
8. Newark
9. Las Vegas (6)
10. Toronto
Chicago continues to hold Hotwire’s Number One spot for the fourth year in a row (because so many Chicago expats go home to visit?)
Now wouldn’t it be nice to see this news make page one of the San Diego Union Tribune, or perhaps be a lead story for our local news stations?
And even better, why doesn’t the State of California pat itself on the back for having three of its cities in Hotwire’s Top 10 List?

Roberta - we kinda like staying here as we have for every new year's eve since we got out of LA 7 years ago. The town is full, there are fireworks, and we always avoid it all. Thanks for the list....
and best new years wishes too.
Gary and Richard:
Perhaps you picked up on my nostalgia for New Year's celebrations in the mountains. Those are times I'll never forget--and I envy you your beautiful setting!
I love San Diego - never have been there for New Years. I love Vegas but don't think I would want to be there for New Years. Have a Great Party!!!
Jo: Thanks for the good wishe! Actually, we spent a couple of New Year's Eves there some years ago and had a great time. My parents attended Hilton's private bash for years and thought it the best.
We started our own parties as a way to include the children in the celebration. Sometimes those little intents develop a life of their own.
