Marin County Neighborhoods -- Terra Linda and Marinwood, San Rafael

At the northern portion of San Rafael, sit two neighborhoods worth a long look for both young families and those thinking of downsizing--Terra Linda and Marinwood. These neighborhoods are established communities with history. There are still original owners who tell stories about how Joseph Eichler would tour the neighborhood offering opinions to homeowners regarding their landscaping, home maintenance decisions, and other musings. Meanwhile, there has been lots of turnover over the past few years as many long-time residents cashed out and a younger demographic began making its presence felt. Terra Linda and Marinwood remain very desireable for both young families and those downsizing for similar reasons:

  1. Lots of single level homes;
  2. A wide variety of floorplans;
  3. Opportunities to customize;
  4. Lots of fully updated homes;
  5. Proximity to parks, schools, pools, and other recreation;
  6. Lots of shopping nearby;
  7. Relatively flat communities, perfect for afternoon strolls;
  8. Safe neighborhoods;
  9. Close to medical care (Kaiser in South Terra Linda and Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae);
  10. Public transportation is readily accessible;
  11. Located on the doorstep of the Great Outdoors, near hiking, biking, and nature watching; and
  12. Lots of good people.

While famous for Eichler designed homes (there are even a few two-story design Eichlers), there are parts of Terra Linda and much of Marinwood with other types of homes of varying shapes and sizes. Also nearby is Lucas Valley, known for being home to Skywalker Ranch. But, it is also characterized by the many wonderful homes bordering open space.

I did not realize that Eichler homes were in the north bay too!  (I'm in Los Gatos and we have a few, but seems to me that most are in Palo Alto/Mountain View.)

Great post. You live and work in a beautiful part of the Bay Area.

You live in a pretty fantastic place too!  I grew up in Los Gatos...  Funny.  After my grandfather gave his L.G. house to my parents (he built it himself near Blossom Hill Elementary), he bought an Eichler in Sunnyvale.  As a kid, I always thought that his house was so cool.  Eichlers really take me back to some great memories.  Thanks for the comment.
