Soon to be a memory

It is a sad day in Santa Clarita, an old friend is on the verge of disappearing for good. Newhall Hardware is closing its doors after there liquidation sale is over. Why are they closing? It seems that competition from the big guys, the economy, and a new traffic patteren have all contributed to the final days..

If you asked anyone in the SCV where you could get an obscure object, most people would ask "have you checked Newhall Hardware" Man they had every thing.

Opened in 1947 by Don Guglielmino, whom owned and operated it until long time employee Victor Feany bought it in 1998. You could go there and ask just about any one a question on a "how to project". Most of the guys that used to work there were retired from the construction trade of some sort. And they would give you a good idea of what you needed, and how to use it effectively.

When you walked into the store one of the first things you did was go into the back and grab a handful of peanuts. As you walked the ailes folks would drop there shells. After your search, the check out was an experience. They did'nt have the new check out registers, they still had the old ones. You know the kind when you pushed the keys to ring up the sale, it would go "cha-ching" and the drawer would pop open.

With each passing day the winds of change take some things away, but always replace them with something new. We may not like it at first but like most things we learn to adapt and move on.

Good bye Newhall Hardware, thanks for serving the great people of the Santa Clarita Valley for all those years!

I understand your pain. I have worked in a family owned hardware store in my home town of Oyster Bay, NY prior to selling Real Estate. Established and still going since 1922. Ironically we have another family owned and operated since 1910 also in Oyster Bay. It is amazing that they have both survived since all the big Home Depots and Lowe's have infested Long Island. Many mom and pop hardware stores have closed their doors across Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Best regards. Joe

Sounds like a great hardware store. There sure aren't enough of these left. I have been a small retail business owner for the past 18 years. It seems that small businesses are being pushed out by the Mass channel chains and over regulated by the local governments. Sad....

That's sad.  I remember when one Mom & Pop shop closed in Texas when I lived there....sniff sniff!

Rob - There is no place like a local hardware store. No one store carries all they used to. Too bad another is closing. We haven't got one in our area left either.

Andrew: Legislature sure is fighting for the little guy.

Joseph: The really old stores are my fav.

Steve: Not in my town.

Shannon: Let me get you a tissue.

Judy T: It is to bad!

So sad to see. The big box stores will never replace the service and dedication that the local hardware store provided.

So many Mom and Pop business's are struggling to survive and with today's economy and consumers full of fear I am afraid more and more of this will happen. I hear ads everyday about liquidation and going out of business sales...

Dawn: I was like you. I picked up the paper one morning and "BAM" there it was. I hated to read that article!

Hank: Unfortunatly it is a reality.

Vanessa: With each passing day more and more are going into the history books or worse, forgotten!
