Do you have mockingbirds? I don't know about anywhere else in the world that has as many as we do in California, but in Central CA we have many, possibly one per household.
When I lived in Colorado, I had one that had the most beautiful songs and felt blessed that it sang outside my window. Now I am in the country and our mockingbirds have a very limited vocabulary of sparrows and finches and it is driving me nuts.
A couple of years ago there were two that lived in the tree in the back yard and sang all night. Did you know they sing till 4 a.m.? They do. I swear I wanted to kill that bird and lo and behold it left. It really did...for a whole year. We were kind of freaked out around here thinking I had super powers.
The mockingbird did finally return (maybe not the same one) the next spring with new songs. I was thrilled and sang along listening to all the unknown tunes.
I'm sitting on my patio this morning enjoying the sunshine and yes, you guessed it, THE MOCKINGBIRD with the limited vocabulary has returned.
So with blessings or curses spring has sprung.
Baby mockingbirds...

we do not have Mockingbirds here, but I have lived in areas where they are plentiful, and boy do they chatter...
Some of my most philosophical moments have been spent with Mockingbirds...
Inspiring, are they not?
Okay, now I am hearing crickets come out of our resident bird. If I start hearing frogs I am going to have to get some help out here like the National Game and Wildlife Preserve!
We have Mockingbirds everywhere near my house in Florida. Here's a picture I took last year from the bush next to my front door. I took a picture of them everyday until they flew the coop.
Wonderful pictures Bryant. They look like flowers. I have pictures of doves somewhere. For an organized person I sure seem unorganized...in my photo department anyway. Thank you for sharing...they sure are quiet, ah. I am just having a noisy mockingbird day...I will get over it.
I love most bird chirping except crows! We seem to have a lot of crows around here and they have a REALLY loud UN-musical CAH, CAH sound that will stop just long enough to let you fall back asleep before they start up again...
I really get freaked out when I see them gathering around for no apparent reason, they're big birds and I hear they are very smart.
p.s. Great pictures!
Gina - crows are really huge aren't they. Did you know they like to eat dry dog food? They do and they help themselves whenever they want!
I have good news about my resident Mockingbirds, they have traveled enough to pick up some new tunes. My question is...how do they sing so many songs when other birds only have one?
