Here's the most recent article and LOWE'S UPDATE provided by My Mother Lode website. This is GOOD news for some. BAD for others. Many locals are uncomfortable with a larger company moving into Sonora, CA. They feel it may take business away from the smaller guys, bring more traffic, more people. And, it may very well do all those things.
On the other side of the issue is the fact that a large company, such as LOWE'S, does NOT just "come to any-town, anywhere," unless they've done their homework and they see growth. That could be good for all. If you're a long-time local, however, you're already sick of us city folks coming up and gobbling up your beautiful land. But, remember, we only do it because we LOVE it here, as you do. 
I for one hope, IF LOWE'S comes to town, it will NOT put a strain on the smaller business guys. I hope they can both survive and thrive to their fullest.
So, I guess we'll wait while they continue hammering out the details.

Kat, It is on logical that a big box coming to town will hurt the small independent local guy. You may want to team up with them and do some cross advertising to help both of your businesses grow. Good luck in Sonora.

Kat, We have had Home Depot for a long time and a new Lowe's. I'm sure it's hurt the local businesses that have been around so long but when I need some help, I will always go back to the locals who can take the time.
Kat - When a large store comes into town there will be changes, usually some of the smaller stores will go under. On the other hand they do bring more employement opportunity which can be a good thing if such is lackig in the area.
Carole: I agree, the local, small businesses give us that "extra" special care when we go in.
Jennifer: There certainly is a list of pros and cons to any new changes that come to town--I understand both side, for sure.

Kat, the invasion of the big box stores is inevitable once a community reaches a certain size.
It's happened here in Belleville too with stores like The Future Shop and Home Depot coming in and taking away a lot of business from the little guys. Then again, it has also brought more affordable products for people on a budget and new jobs for the area ...so there are silver linings in the clouds....

Jo: I agree with both the pros and cons. I know I will still buy from our smaller hardware stores, even after Lowes comes in. But basically, I think "we can all get along" and help our towns grow in a positive way by offering a multitude of services and stores. Something for everybody!
Kat, even here in Miami, where we're no longer a "small town," we have the same issues. There's good and bad in having one of big guys open up. I use their "coming soon" signs as indication that the surrounding area will be growing rapidly. Best of luck!
Kat, haven't visited you for awhile. Looks like you've been busy since this is the first post I could find. Small towns, in my experience, don't stay that way forever. We all want the conveniences without the crowds and yet to be in our "rural" areas. Doesn't last.........
