If you're a junk food junkie, you might want to take a pass on this post.

Today, we're talking about slow food. Yep, there is an actual slow food movement. With more than 80,000 members, Slow Food USA strives to educate the public about the choices they make in the foods they eat. They believe in using fresh, local, organic foods and in taking the time to prepare them so they are tasty and wholesome. They also believe in celebrating food and taking the time to savor it and share time with others while dining.
Slow Food USA has over 170 local chapters across the US, each called a convivium collectively convivia. Today's Press-Enterprise featured an article about slow food. The Castle has embraced the movement, and Slow Food Temecula Valley will hold a free membership party Tuesday November 20 at 6pm at The Temecula Valley Cheese Company on 5th Street in Old Town. My taste-buds and I are looking forward to being there.

Sounds like a good idea. I hate fast food, but sometimes time or budget don't allow me to sit down to a healthy, tasty meal.
Uh...I'm an all food junkie...good/bad/different. So I didn't take a pass....but that sandwhich looked wonderful...must have been a garden burger lol! Slow food movement. We eat while watching tv and joke in between mouthfuls. (we usually are watching the news at dinner time so it's pretty entertaining) I get what you mean though. Savor it and enjoy it.
Tom, This sounds very interesting....I'll check out all of the links you posted . I am firm believer that 90 % of diseases and behaviour problems have a base in the foods we eat.
Many people have a genetic background or evolutionary history that does not jive with the diets they are currently eating.
For instance, I have in my ancestry a lot of Irish and Native American genes and as such, I belong to the hunter-gatherer gene pool. I'm unable to digest gluten and dairy products and after a lifetime of problems with anemia, congestion, pneumonia, etc, I'm finally healing with a gluten and dairy free diet (these things were not known when I was a child and I was treated for the illnesses I had, but the doctors never saw that it was the foods my parents were feeding me that were the root cause for all of my problems.)
One day every child will be genetically mapped at birth and the parent will be given a chart showing all the foods the child can consume, and those that should never be given to the child. It will make a world of difference in the lives of so many human beings.

I absolutely loved this post. Now a days people don't take the time to understand what food and nutrition really is. All they want is that quick fix of sugar and fat to satisfy a petty need. If people just understood that healthier foods can be just as enjoyable as that burger in the picture (which I don't think looks that appetizing, but that's beside the point) it would make a world of difference in many peoples lives. I stand behind this movement and would really loved to get more involved.
Tom - This is great! I hate fast food! I always try to be home to fix a home cooked meal (My hubby is very spoiled...), but when I can't it almost does me in to stop and get a burger to bring home.
Wonderful post!
Tom - I never eat fast food, but had never heard of slow food - I checked the link - thank you!!!!
I don't eat fast food. Or much cooked food for that matter, but when I do - it's always slow food. We have a big movement of Slow Food businesses here in Portland and it can be hard to resist!
Tom - I think fast food is nasty. I have not been to a McDonalds or Burger King in over 20 years. Healty eating is the way to go!
Jennifer - This is the first I have heard of them. I love the idea.
Sally - Me, too. I do love food that's been cooked with fresh ingredients by someone who's put time and love into it.
Jo - I think you're right on the mark. Nutrition plays a vital role in our overall health.
Collette - I'm glad I was on target for you. I'm looking forward to tomorrow.
Linda - I'll bet you're a great cook. Lucky hubby!
Bill & Barbara-Jo - From youyr blog it sounds like there's no lack of quality restaurants in your area.
Jennifer - Are you a raw food eater? I know there's a name for that, but it escapes my mind. I could eat vegetarian, there are many dishes I love, but I have to have some of my food cooked!
Bill - Good for you! I can't make the same claim, but I make healthy choice as often as possible.
Over time I've learned to eat slow food fast. What I mean by that is I try to nosh on baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, and cashews for some healthy alternatives to those burgers all the time. My wife keeps saying I am a grazer but I understand that is a healthy way to eat. There is too much fat, sugar, and sodium in typical fast food diets. The giant drinks amaze me. It's no wonder kids get obese so early.
Great Post Tom.....Fast food is unusually high in fat and complex carbohydrates ( which turn into more fat for our bodies to storage because our american diets take in a surpluss of carbs anyway).
You are what you eat - eat healthy the body will reward you with a longer pancreatic life, less arteriosclerosis and de-calcification etc. etc. etc..
will check out the links - this is a postive movement toward a better life-style - thanks for sharing
Sincerely,
Grace Safrin
Hi Tom,
I am not a fast food fan and I buy and prepare fresh foods. One thing that really disturbs me is the kind of food that is served in the schools. Thanks for the links, I'll check them out.
Raw for me, please! Tom, thank you for reading my post! That was actually a mini post (not a favorite). Here are some of my favorite ones:
