The November election is profoundly important to our country. Added to the ballot in California are several propositions. I've noticed that these "Propositions" are worded in a confusing way, making it difficult for voters to decide on a clearly defined issue.
Proposition 8 is no different.
"Proposition 8" is also known as the "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry Act". It was previously titled the "Protect Marriage Act" and has also been known as the "Same-Sex Marriage Ban."
If Proposition 8 passes, it will add a new constitutional amendment to the California Constitution that will have the following text: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." The ballot title for the measure says that Prop. 8 "eliminates the right of same-sex couples to marry".
Today I read an extremely disturbing comment on a Blog about this subject:

100% honest here..... what does a homosexual union do for our state? Our society? Our country? NOTHING. They can't produce children. That is what heterosexual marriage is about. A union, a promise between a man and a woman to bring children into this world and to boost our society. Marriage is not soley about love. Love is involved, but marriage is not a right to marry the person you love. IT is an agreement between a man and a woman to bring children into this world and to raise them in a home with a father and a mother. That is the best environment for a child. Without heterosexual couples producing children into a loving home, society will die off. If homosexual relationships did not exist, nothing would happen to society. There is not need for homosexual marriage in our society. It does noting to help this state, this country or this world. The only affect it will have is the downfall of it. There is no need for homosexual marriage.

I think that in terms of the Active Rain Guidelines this amounts to HATE SPEECH.

Stewart, What is wrong with these people. They are so full of Fear and Hate.
Through my life I have known and still know many Gay and Lesbian couples. Many have adopted and are the most loving, caring, tender, intelligent parents I have ever know. Most once finding their partner stay together for life and are quite monogamous. My three cousins were raised by my aunt and her partner who have been together for 43 years.
Marriage is not based on children. What an utterly foolish statement. Many, many couples choose not to have children.
"the best environment for a child" This person is SICK.
6 children under the age of 4 were murdered today by their mother or father and another 20,000 were abused today by their mother or father . I hope this Idiot is not inferring these atrocities were committed by Gay's. I don't even ask for God's Mercy on low-life's like this.
Stewart,
I just read the post and comments. Interesting how almost every single person commented anonymously.
They don't even have the B---'s to say it to your face.
SICK SICK SICK!!!!!!!!
Linda - I am rarely at a loss for words, but reading the extreme intolerance and intensity of the fear displayed by so many of the commentators, has left me speechless.
God Bless You Stewart. You are a FAR BETTER person than ANY of them. I can not even believe how Nicholas responded to you on that post. Unbelievable Bigotry!
Keep a Happy Face! We have to consider the source.
It is such a shame that we all can't get into the 21st century together.....there's a pretty good chunk that didn't even make it to the 20th yet!
I think that gay couples should be able to enjoy the nagging, lack of sex and the excruciating conversation of everyday minutia that us straight couples get to enjoy through marriage every day!
In all seriousness though...it really is startling to see how much further we need to go as human beings. One of these days we'll treat everyone equally and just be a bunch of happy human beings instead a bunch of archaically segregated classifications.
Keep up the good fight, Stewart!
Stewart I am in GREAT company with you. Nicholas just insulted me on that post too. LOL
Mike. Great Comment. (as usual)
marriage is just a seperate name for a union (recognized civilly and religiously) that can produce its own children. whether a couple has children or not---i think this is kind of a miracle and deserves a different name.
i actually see marriage as the ultimate expression of equality. it takes one man and one woman. a lesbian relationship is a marginalization of men, where a gay union is a marginalization of women.
when it comes to families, i don't believe in any parent being marginalized.
peace out

I'm voting NO on 8.
You know, I really wish all the time and effort and money that gets spent on stuff like Prop 8 could be channelled instead into fixing the economy, or fixing health care, or feeding the poor.....
I think the state made a mistake when it got into the business of marriage in the first place.
I say this because marriage is a sacrament---that means marriage is defined by the church, which ultimately means (because we have freedom of religion) that anyone can define marriage anyway that suits them.
The problem was created when we started licensing sacraments, and thus we dragged an entirely private argument into a public forum. The state does have a role to play in the protection of children. The state is helpful in defining some of the rules of civil unions and the disolution of those unions. That doesn't have a thing to do with arguments about what marriage means.
What next? Is the state going to license baptism or bar mitzvahs? And then when I demand equal access to those sacraments despite following a belief counter to those traditions ... ?
I say this to both sides: you're entitled to think what you want and do what you want. But I firmly believe the government should remain far from religion and beliefs. Nothing positive can come from that argument. Let's also understand that some people aren't very diplomatic and they aren't very good at arguing.
So, someone disagrees with your position that does not mean that I'm engaging in 'hate speech'.
BTW, 'hate speech' is another one of my irks. We're supposed to have freedom of speech, not freedom from insults. I don't have a problem with 'hate speech', just 'hate actions'. 'Hate speech' is an attempt to label something so you don't have to argue with it. It's a corollary to an ad hominem attack.
To be honest, I see a great degree of passion and intolerance on both sides of this debate. I just wish the government was smaller and less intrusive. I wish the government did not selectively license sacraments---because we will never agree on the meaning of sacraments ... eh ... thank goodness.
Linda / Mike - Thanks for your support and encouragement.
Cheryl - It's true .... the time, energy and expense invested in Prop 8 could be put to beneficial use by addressing real issues.
As a REALTORS, we should all be aware of the differences marriage make in the way homeowners hold title.
REALTORS who campaign to remove constitutional rights from California citizens, should really talk to their brokers about your professional liability as it relates to Fair Housing Laws.
How can you one claim to offer Equal Housing Opportunity and campaign to remove constitutional rights from one's clients?
Steve - You raise an excellent point.
Have you posted this thought on the Blog I referred to above?
Stewart,
I did post the same comment on the blog you were referencing.
