Part of my job as a relocation specialist to the Denver Metro area is to dispel myths. The biggest myth I deal with is the one that Denver is "hip-deep" in snow all winter long. Out-of-staters are generally very skeptical of my words when I tell them Denver enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine a year. Why that's more than San Diego and Honolulu areas, that are known for the outstanding weather.
My clients either believe me or not. Once they take the plunge and move here, they are convinced. I love the telephone calls I get from these skeptics telling me how I was SO RIGHT and thanking me for Colorado's wonderful weather. (Like I have anything to do with it!)
The Sun is NOT Shining Today...
Then of course there are days like today. The snow has arrived, it's coming up from the Gulf, that means it's wet and heavy. Whenever we get hit with a gulf storm, we know it!
The storm hit this morning, today at noon there was a foot of snow on the ground in my neighborhood. The 
snow keeps on falling, predictions are 24 inches by tomorrow! Oh my!
Weather like this is the exception to the norm...honest! Most folks around here find it is a wonderful time to stay home, grab a book and relax. Nesting at home is something we don't do enough anymore. Enjoy!
For those of you in the bright, warm sunny climates, it's your time to Gloat! I know many of you left the four seasons to enjoy one long season of perfection. Awesome weather all the time has its attraction, but doesn't it get boring?
I love my four seasons, I love the color of fall, the crisp cold air of winter, even the occasional blizzard or two. Spring brings on a rebirth of life and we start all over again. Life without the seasons would be confusing and dull.
Of course that's my story, yours may differ! So gloat on...I'm at home today with no place to go. I'm stranded! Yippee!
Excuse me, gotta go the cookies are ready. ;)

It's 6:00 P.M and the snow is still blowing strong. The Governor has declared a state of emergency for Colorado. He has activated the National Guard who are patrolling the Interstate helping those that are stranded. DIA and all roads all the way to the Colorado Boarders are closed.
Some poor folks at DIA boarded a plane thinking they were leaving town this morning. Instead they had the pleasure of sitting on the tarmac for 8 HOURS!
I am so sad for the people who are stranded. I wish I could reach out an help them...somehow.

They say "timing is everything."
The fate of holiday travelers today will agree with that. Some made it out of the state, but 3000 others are stuck at DIA until who knows. The news reports many travelers at the airport right now will not get to their destination until Sunday. Ouch!
The Boulder Turnpike is bumper to bumper. Several motorists have reported leaving Boulder at 1:00 this afternoon, 7 hours later they are still on the Turnpike. 7 hours to go 20 miles? (I can be patient, but what about my bladder?)
Heros of the night...
The guys who work the snowplows deserve medals. They are currently working 12 hours shifts. Private contractors are out plowing the roads alongside the paid guys from city and state. They have been at it all day. With the strong wind it's hard to see evidence of their work, but they keep at it, all day and all night. Three cheers for them!
Governor Bill has called out the National Guard. These guys also deserve a lot of credit. Currently they drive around in their Hummers, pulling people from immobilized cars and taking them to safety. They are also working the edge of the city, turning back people who are trying to go home to the plains. It would seem most folks would "get it by now" and go find a warm place to hang out. But so many guys who work in the city have livestock at home...wonder why they didn't go home sooner.
The Roads Are Closed...
In every direction with the exception of the Metro Denver area the interstates and state roads are closed. Turn around go back. If you get stuck don't leave your car. Visibility is ZERO. Keep your tailpipe clear. Drink water and stay put.
The Stores are Closed
It's 5 days until Christmas and the Malls are closed. In fact they closed at 3 p.m. Flat Irons Mall near Boulder is being used as a Shelter. So are multiple hotels along the highway. IN fact the Marriot here in Lone Tree is welcoming travelers to stay in the lobby. There are no rooms, but anyone can pull up the floor on the lobby and make themselves at home.
When will the snow stop
Of course nobody knows for sure, but the storm has moved the wind is coming from the NE. The weather guys say the snow will start to let up by late morning. Supposedly the good folks in Kansas will be having a White Christmas just like us!
I forgot to mention, Sunday the sun will come out. The temperature will be in the 40's ... The Big Meltdown will begin.
Good People
During time like these when everywher you look, it's so nice to see neighbors helping neighbors. We won't wait for the snowplow to visit our street. As soon as the snow stops we will be out there, shoveling our drives. When we finish shoveling ours, we'll go on to the next one and the next one, until they are all done. We will get to meet neighbors we only see once or twice a year. Greeting each other and lending a helping hand is great therapy for cabin fever and the human spirit.
The blizzard may deliver cold white snow, but it warms our hearts.

I love the four seasons but hate dealing with the snow. Atlanta is the perfect place for me. A little taste of snow every year but nice weather is never far away. But the 2 feet of snow we got in 1994 was actually a lot of fun.
Tim ~ Atlanta is a lovely place to live. The only problem I recall were all the streets are either peachtree or magnolia something... :)
My sister loved the weather in Denver - and the first time I went skiing it took forever for us to actually get to the snow. Enjoy the cookies, we're at 78 degrees here! hee hee

I am jealous too! I hate the little 2-3 inchers but love a good safe blizzard!! Despite living in New England, we haven't had a good snow storm on the coast of Connecticut in a very long time. I would love to stay home, bake cookies, read a good book....ahhhh, it sounds heavenly. Enjoy!!!
Ines ~ You wouldn't much like the weather here right now. The Interstate is closed from my exit all the way to New Mexico. The poor people who live south of me are trying desparately to get home. Both the Post Office and UPS have pulled their trucks off the road. Now you know how bad that is!

Linda ~ I agree with you and Jay, 3 inches isn't quite enough. Of course right now I 'm waiting to hear that all of my family is tucked in safe and sound. So far, that's not the case. Are us old folks the only ones who pay attention to the weather reports?
Please send cookies. As always the strom is headed our way. I noticed that they started salting the streets over in West St. Paul. We are ready for it but I have not finished my Christmas shopping yet and have one more class to teach and 4 more houses to show this week. I hope the cookies are shaped like trees and bells and stars and have little sprinkles and or frosting on them because those are the kind I used to make back in the days when I had time for it.

Kristal I think we need to send Ines a virtual snowball. Yep, Southern Colorado is enjoying the snow as well as the wind. But it makes everything so pretty, and yes difficult to drive on. I've been out taking pictures. It is so rare that we get so much snow and that it is sticking.

Kristal, We live in one of those places with 300 days of sunshine per year too! But, that doesn't mean we have 300 days of sunshining all day. Sometimes it hides behind a cloud and comes out a few times during the day. You probably know how that goes. I do like the 4 seasons, but the older I get the less I like the winter... especially since I just found out I franctured one of my vertebrae when I fell on the ice two weeks ago. MRI tomorrow to determine what to do about it. :-(
OUCH! Sorry to hear you had a tumble. I don't like that part either. It seems no matter how hard you try the danger is always there. I was out taking photos a couple weeks ago and slipped on a hill. Luckily nothing got hurt but my pride. Hope your MRI turns out OK.
Wow Carol - I'm sorry to hear about your fall - hope it's nothing serious! As for the virtual snow ball - I'LL TAKE IT!!! That is so thoughtful of you guys! Although this is what happens to Florida Snowmen.

Minnesota has gorgeous sunny days in the winter...when it is 25 below - I know, I lived there.

Kristal - Sorry about the weather there. We were actually complaining of being chilly today (in the 50s) because we have been spoiled here in Charlotte for the last couple of years. I guess I can gloat a little. My client from WI last week asked what we were wearing here. I felt bad telling her tshirt and shorts (70s last weekend). She said she couldn't wait to join us. WI had 10 inches and she never wanted to see snow again. A BIG snowstorm may be fun for a day or two but you guys have my pity.

Kristal, I got an instant message from a good friend in Boulder a few minutes ago, leading me to his personal blog about the "blizzard of 2006." I actually miss the snow after 20 years in Los Angeles. The constant sunshine here is boring. I mean that. That is not a rub. Well, maybe a little bit.
OK Kristal. Got your message loud and clear. I'm one of those that are enjoying the perpetual sunshine in Buckeye, Ariizona today (52 degrees with snow drifts at zero). I tried to join your community of 24 inch snow fall with drifts to 6 feet (by tommorrow in the plains) but my flight was cancelled this morning to Denver, Colorado. I was headed to Broomfield to my second home to enjoy Christmas with the grandkids. Unfortunately because some may have done a snow dance, I may have to stay here and sulk in the sunshine wishing I could be where you are.

We actually have three here in Phoenix. Warm, hot and blast furnace. Actually we're cold right now with highs in the mid 50's. (below normal!) I have to say I miss real seasons too, but I wouldn't trade this for the world. Love snow, hate the cold. Plus as we blogged a couple of days ago, the snow is only a couple of hours away in Northern AZ. I have to admit though, there really isn't anything like waking up to see a fresh untouched blanket of snow on the ground, (except maybe for our AZ sunsets!)

We're having unusually warm weather. Local forecaster is telling us that our temps the past couple days were warmer than Phoenix - he's preparing people for January when the Buckeyes flock out there.
A couple years ago we had a big storm hit near Christmas. My neighbor had asked to store his new garden tractor in my garage since there's only one car - the WEENR mobile - in there. In exchange, he said if it snowed, he would clear my drive with his snowblower. Boy, did I luck out!!!! I finally told him to stop because I felt so quilty, given that I have a Cherokee and my driveway is one of the few times I get to use 4WD. ;-)
No shoveling of snow here in Tampa, but I did cut the lawn and fertilize the flowers this week!
Hi KK, Monika and I are sitting here watching the news and seeing that Denver is expected to get 3' of snow. We turned to each other and thought of you right away. We are having an exceptionally mild fall this year. We are used to having Nor'easter type storms that can dump up to 2' of snow. I am glad we have barren ground and it's nice that buyers can now walk around a house without getting snow in their boots.

So my frigid 24° on the drive in this morning was actually balmy and the ½ inch of ice I had to melt to drive was wimpy compared to the 24 inch Denver carpet? Still a bit nippy by California standards....
You're right though... Denver is like Seattle-- more bad reputation about their weather than truly deserved.

One of my favorite things to do in college was to declare a "snow day" which is essentially "nesting", as you so aptly put it, at home. A "snow day" was the holiday kids in NJ were given when the snowfall was too heavy for safe transit.
I haven't had a "snow day" in 15 years since I left the east coast for sunny climes. I might just call one for tomorrow in honor your snowfall, KK. If I go on a comment-a-thon tomorrow, you'll all know I declared a snow day in San Diego

We have had 2 feet already here in Castle Rock. My wife and I just went on a short drive and barely got out of the drive way. Literally no one on the road. Not one store open in Castle Rock. It was really spooky.
My family was supposed to fly in tomorrow morning, but I hear that DIA will be closed till tomorrow night!

I've got at least two feet of snow. Of course the streets in my neighborhood are not plowed. I went out at noon and got stuck just in front of my home. I had to shovel my car out of the snow, just to get it into my garage. I'm NOT leaving (not that I have a choice!).

You should be envied for curling up in front of a warm fire with a good book - many people are going crazy a few days before Christmas, and there you are, enjoying serenity.
Oh, what I wouldn't give to be stranded at home every once in a while. I'm still gloating though. I came from Michigan, so I've known a snowy winter or two, but still love Texas in the winter!!!! I was out shopping and it was around 55 degrees and the girl at the counter mentioned how cold it is.....That's my kind of cold!
Hey it's not fair -- you get to have fun on snow days! Hurricane days we are either working like made to prepare for the storm or working so hard to clean up after a storm! I say it again -- I miss snow days!
Kristal - just saw pics from Denver on "Good Morning America" and heard an interview with someone who's been stuck in the airport for over 24 hours at this point, or as of about an hour ago I guess. Wow - I hope for all involved that the snow lets up soon. You'll definitely have a white Christmas this year for sure, but all those poor folks trapped in the airport.......thank goodness I'm flying SOUTH this morning and not WEST!!!

I just saw Denver buried in snow on aol. I thought of you. I love a good blizzard, just hate the aftermath when it starts to melt and turns to mush and slush. Buyers that come out in a blizzards are serious buyers.
We have actually been having balmy weather in NY. Global warming or something it is not normal to be eating outside at cafes and seeing people in shorts in December in NY.

I have to admit I really do feel sorry for you, despite my earlier gloating. I moved to sunny Phoenix the year after we had 17 snow and ice storms ride up the east coast one after another. Shoveling out of snow over a foot thick three weeks in a row, and getting plowed back in was the kicker. So, I can feel for you with over 2 feet. HMMM, maybe more people might be looking to relo here from your area.

Jay ~ yes, my patio is FULL! We have 5 seasons here. the fifth being "mud". The mud season turns up more than once during the year! ;)
KK - THanks for the concern. She's safe and sound. Thornton Fire Rescue picked her up last night at 8:00 PM, took her to the fire station, ambulance transferred her to Thornton Rec Center. Got home at 9:00 AM this morning, got her car at 6:00 PM tonight. She's cool. She'll be back to work in the A.M. at DIA. Look her up if you need help, she's Customer Service with United Airlines. She'll make sure you get where you need to go. Her name is Audrey. My precious bride of 27 years.

Ken ~ I am so glad to hear Audrey is OK. What an adventure for her. I know the Thornton Rec Center is a very nice place, but a hotel it is not!
On another note, does a Customer Service Rep at United Airlines know of a place where I could get a brochure for a "Denver Crash Pad" hung up? I've got this darling little furnished condo for sale... :)

KK.... some great shots. I LOOOOVVEEE snow.... I also love my summer....hence why I like this area.... not so much NJ... but I love the beach and snow. And I love it when we get a dumping of 2 feet.
I agree..... can 365 days be boring...of just warmth... and not always sun??? Each person is different.
Overall....what a great write up of your area. Giving input, data, and some great pics.
oh yea.... that comment about getting snowed in...stuck in.... and that it's a great time to relax...possibly read and or catch up on some things. So damn true and it's an awesome excuse to just relax and do nothing.... because most people, especially in our industry within the area are doing NOTHING.
My problem.... I have networked nationally.... but that is what computers and sell phones are for... I can be snowed in and still do an hours worth of work and then relax... again, great job here.

KK - The Denver Crash pad looks good. Good price too for agents transferring to Denver from other locations. I'll let her know. She's my very best, top of the line marketing person for me so she may be able to hook up with a buyer.

We haven't had the chance to get out to enjoy the snow. My 2 year old has been very sick the last 2 days (running a 104 fever) so I've been housebound.
On Wed. night our friends party was cancelled so my husband decided to play good samaritan. He went out in our SUV with chains and towed 12 cars out of the snow and gave a few stranded travellers a ride to their homes. 36 was a mess. He got in at 2 AM. He loves helping people out like that, and always kept car repiar tools in his car in England 'just in case'. Now we just don't have room with the dogs and kids + the winter emergency kit.
Dena, we're got a burn permit last week to burn our slash. We're going to have a bondfire Chistmas day and are spit-roasting a lamb roat and a goose on the fire.
P.S. I agree with you, I love 4 seasons; couldn't do without it. I tire of summer much more quickly than I do of winter. We can snowshoe and cross country ski from our front door.
Jeff ~ I see you were here last night! I've been out enjoying my new found freedom today. The snowplows came rolling by at 10:30 and by 11:00 we were on the road again...breakfast, shopping and runnin' around. It really felt good.
Teresa ~ you must come see snow someday. I suggest you do it when things aren't so NUTS, like during the holidays. :)
Ken ~ super! I'll take all the help I can get on the Crash Pad. It's a darling place...only 7 minutes to employee parking...unless of course there's a blizzard! :)

KK - as you drive by on Sunday notice how much snow vs tumbleweeds you see from Eagleridge to Burn Mill Rd. I bet the tumbleweeds out weigh the snow.

Eaglerigdge is on the North Side (Texas Road house) and Burn Mill Rd is on the South Side (past the steel mill). Have a great trip!

Santa will probably be coming to Michigan tonight, but he wont be stopping at our house. Yes its true. We are celebrating ukrainian orthodox christmas (or our own version of it. So Santa has time on his side. I love that Gregorian calendar.
Yesterday Katya's Ukrainian School went caroling. It was cute but she had to be bribed with candy to stand still. She was the youngest one there, and not ready for it yet. Today we went for a carriage ride around Birmingham, which was very festive.

Hi Ken ~ the snow depth varied from 2.5 feet to as much as 3.5 feet in the foothills. We had about 33 inches in our area. In front of my side of the garage it drifted to 4.5 feet...thank goodness the HOA guys came about 4 a.m. on Saturday morning to scoop it out.
MF ~ Yes, the stores maybe empty. All the malls we've seen look packed with people.

The foothills always gets more snow. I don't know if you remember 2003 but this is what our before and after pictures looked like in front of our home in Riva Chase (CO) then:

Although we loved it in the mountains, being from Hawaii ,the winter snows were a little much for us. We moved last year to Broomfield and Arizona. I hear the snows are headed to Colorado tonight with a replay of last week a high possibility. Stay warm.

Ken ~ remember it? How could I forget that snowstorm? Not in a livetime will I ever forget! We had the sa the same thing. I had a client from Texas come in who had 3 days to buy a house. We were looking up on the mountains. I never saw so many collapsed decks as I did then. I haven't Neen any since.

I'm in Broomfield today. My wife refuses to let me return to AZ until the coming storm does its exit. I rather be with her and the grandkids for New Years anyway so It's a good thing.

KK - Be glad you're enjoying the TX weather. The only hope is for kathy Sabine to say " We're happy to report today that the snow expected was less than 3 inches due to the weather system shifting north of the city". Have a great New Year celebration in Texas.

Ken ~ that is in fact good news. Our family and employees have been calling to let us know the snow is starting up again. Shifting north is good. South is bad (for us). We enjoyed Texas and are now on the way to Tulsa, OK! It's lovely here.
BTW Your home in Riva Chase looks very nice. I bet you miss it, just not the 2003 snow!

KK - Sorry, I hope I didn't confuse you but Kathy Sabine didn't say that. I just hope that she will. I am actually looking at the snow right now as it collects on my deck and the Broadlands Golf Course. No crazy golfers today by the way.
I do miss Riva Chase. When I pulled the photos to do my comment to you I had to reminisce a bit.

Just checked the national weather report and Denver is getting hit again. Living in Hilton Head, SC, I think I've seen snow flurries once in 6 years. I do have to admit that when I first moved here from the snowy north, I used to get a little laugh every time I tuned in to the Weather Channel!

OK. That's it, I've had enough fun for the winter. Cactus, funny looking insects, thorny plants, and desertscape is starting to look good to me. I rather be like Diane and watch it all on the weather channel from from deck TV (no snow) in Verrado, Arizona.

Truth be told, I grew up in Minneapolis. Came to Hawaii almost 30 years ago due to SNOW. Girl, you need to come here for a break when things let up. So sorry to hear about the avalanches. Prayers to you, yours and the people of Denver.
Kelly ~ I understand completely. I got married on the beach at Wikiki a long time ago. We almost moved back their after my hubby got back from Vietnam. We both chickened out because it was "so far from home." My Grandma even asked if our marriage "was legal". Hahaha.
So I had my chance and blew it! We are thinking of Hawaii next year, on the way home from New Zealand...
BTW the avalanche of yesterday had a happy ending. I can't imagine driving along and having a ton of snow push you off the road. Everyone got dug out. :) All's well that ends well!
