Denver ~ We don't need no stinkin' mountain!

Vali snowboarding off the Colorado History Museum RoofYesterday while the majority of the sane folks waited inside their warm homes, reading books, watching TV and cleaning an occasional closet, others not nearly so sane ventured out in search of adventure. Snow does something to the brains of snow riders. They have a strong need, a craving to ride the snow, no matter how far they must travel, they go off in search of the perfect ride.

One such person is my daughter, Vali Wimberly. Yesterday Vali and a few of her friends found adventure atop the roof of the Colorado History Museum. They were photographed by CNN, The Rocky Mountain News and each other. Luckily the police had their radar guns put away thanks to the blizzard!

I wonder if the architect of the Colorado History Museum has this sort of event in mind when he designed this building? Talk about "Multi Use!"

<Yes Guys the Daughter is single...I dare you to catch her if you can!>

Snowboarding off the roof of the Colorado History Museum

Yesterday I had a song running through my head, it went like this, "The Sun Will Come out Tomorrow..."

Well the sun actually came out yesterday. It was a beautiful sight as the skies cleared up we could see the mountains once again. From our bedroom window we had a clear view of Long's Peak, about 100 miles away. The sky was blue and the snow covered mountains looked wonderful.

We couldn't go anywhere until late this morning. Hubby had the driveway (or at least 1/2 of it) cleared. The plow finally showed up to do the "one pass thru" at about 10:30. All the neighbors came out to watch the event. Of course I was there with my camera...now I'm SNOWPLOW Paparazzi!

Today's HERO are the snowplow drivers of the world. It got me to thinking what a cool job it must be. We all await and when they show up we cheer. They can see immediate results of their work. There must be a lot of gratification for these guys. Thank you Snowplow drivers! You Rock!

View of Longs PeakDenver International Airport Opened at 12:30

Our oldest son is a consultant who travels. He's been stuck in Tulsa, OK for the past few days. Typically very creative he was trying to find a way home. He was almost ready to fly to Salt Lake and drive home to Denver from the west, when United Airlines sent and empty plane to Tulsa.

This got us to talking about the magnitude of getting the Air Traffic back to normal all over the country. Since nothing has moved in or out of Denver for over 2 days, this ripple effect is being felt all over the country. Many travelers are still stranded at the airport. Compounding the problem is the fact this is the busiest time of year for air travel.

Mike told us the Security Line was snaking around the terminal for miles. It was hard to know where to get in The sun shinning on a welcome snowplowline, its a mass of humanity. The news is reporting a TWO HOUR wait just to get through security. Looking at the news clip, I would guess that timing is optimistic. They are also telling folks if they don't have a "confirmed flight ticket" not to show up.

At the present time there are only 2 runways open. The efforts to get them all cleaned off, and safe to use are constant. Watching the efforts from the air one can see a resemblance to a choreographed dance. 16 huge snowplows line up in a "V" formation, like Canadian Geese. The work the runways, inch by inch. This much snow is a lot to move. Its heavy and then there's the problem of where to put it all!

The Malls opened today

If you can find a place to park amid the snow mountains, consider yourself lucky. The stores are more than anxious to welcome consumers. They have been forced to closed over the two busiest shopping days of the year.

my snowshoesThe Big Meltdown

Traveling on the Interstate was not a problem from the snow, but the water and the heavy traffic. Everyone is out, desparate to get back on track for the holidays. The snow was melting, but there's no place for all the water to go!

The Weatherman says we're getting a little more snow, starting tonight. Guess I won't put my snowshoes away, just yet!

P.S. If any Active Rainers have loved ones stuck at DIA that would like to get out of there...please let me know. I have a guest room they might enjoy...I'll even go pick them up. Just call.

Kristal, that is insane, but looks like fun.

Your daughter sure looks like you.

And those shoes, they sure look like Brian Brady's new sandals.....LOL.

Kristal, You are awesome.  These are awesome pictures.    I understand they cleared the runway long enough for Allen Iverson to arrive!

What a nice offer for the guest room!   I think you should get extra AR points for that!   I almost got stuck at DIA once the week before Christmas.  I got out of town just before a big storm hit.

Kristal, did you take those pics of Vali? Looks scary to me.  How did they get on the roof?

I love that one of Long's Peak.

(12/22/06 10:03PM) — Kristal Kraft ~ Denver Real Estate

George, yes I agree snowboarding can be totally insane.  Thanks for the compliment, I wish I looked like my daughter!  The shoes are only good for trails. They don't really work well in 3 foot of frest powder!

Carol ~ did you hear...the Nuggets are going to play the rest of the season for the Broncos. At least the Nuggets can fight.  :( I haven't heard from anyone at DIA yet.  I feel soooo helpless .... I hate seeing those poor folks stuck out there.  For some people it's going on 3 days.

MF ~ No the Vali pic's are not mine.  Part of me wishes I could have seen it and the other part say's it's a good thing I didn't see her.  I will look in my gallery to see if I have a snowless pic of the Museum.  I think you can just climb on from the street. Longs Peak is awesome as is all the other peaks we view from our house.

KK - The pics are great, you have so much talent in telling a story. Great job!

(12/22/06 10:47PM) — Kristal Kraft ~ Denver Real Estate

Angus ~ Thanks I appreciate that, coming from a great storyteller (yourself!)  haggus is gross!

(12/23/06 01:57AM) — Jessica Hughes

you are a consumate storyteller.  and I loved all the photos.  i do have to say though, that our view of longs (& meeker) is better (well at least it's bigger).

I was itching to test out my new camera during/after this snowstorm, but both my daughters wer so sick that I just went into super mommy mode.  i have eloise sleeping on my chest right now.

Sure Kristal! Rub it in—rub it in! Our pathetic little leftovers from your storm is just about gone! ENVY—ENVYENVY!

Jay

Kristal,
Great commentary! You sure sound chipper after all that snow, you remind me of me! Pretty great photos too! My heart goes out to all the travelers stuck at DIA, how kind of you to offer them a room and ride! Thats the spirit girl! Merry Christmas to you and yours!

WOW - not only offering a room, but to go and pick them up! Hope you don't get lost in the next coming snow.

In a future blog, will you share your secrets of placement? Whenever I try to put multiple photos in an AR blog they just move each other around with a will of their own.

(12/23/06 08:42AM) — Linda Davis

Somehow I almost missed this post.  Thank goodness for my associates list which I check regularly.

It is 57 degrees right now on the shoreline of Connecticut at 9:30AM.  We have had no snow this year - none, nada, zip, zero.  WHERE IS OUR SNOW???  This is supposed to be New England.

While the timing of your storm was unfortunate, it sure looks perfect for Christmas!  And your photos are awesome as usual.  And I agree with Sharon - I have yet to tame multiple photos.

(12/23/06 09:39AM) — Kristal Kraft ~ Denver Real Estate

Jessica ~ I hope your daughters get better today so you can post a picture of your Longs Peak.  I bet it's nicer since your practically on top of it!

Jay ~ Sorry I don't mean to rub it in.  If I had been asked, I would have shared my snow with everyone!

(12/23/06 09:45AM) — Kristal Kraft ~ Denver Real Estate

Lysa ~ Glad I sound chipper!  We are actually enjoying the excitement.  Of course we haven't got a thing to complain about, we're home, warm and comfortable.  Others weren't so lucky.  Thanks for the holiday wishes, I hope you have a great holiday too.

Sharon ~ Sadly I had no taker.  Guess folks are now into full swing holidy mode. Everything on AR seems to be slowing down.  Certainly I'll try to share the photo placement.  thanks for the "blog fodder" as my husband calls it.

Linda ~ I do think we hogged all the moisture for the moment.  Your day will come...hang in there!
Yes, I'll do a photo blog.  I didn't know others were having issues with pics.

Happy Holidays to all. Today is my "big day" with the family.  Our kids are arriving to COOK FOR ME!  Yippee!  I get to play with the Grandkids.

Enjoy your Family Christmas today, Kristal!  May 2007 be happy, healthy and prosperous for you and yours.

Might not be long before 'urban snowboarding' is the next new event in the Winter Olympics. Have a great holiday with your family!

KK - AWESOME pictues!!  And I love the story that accompanied it!  You have such a way with words - what great pictures you paint with them!

I heard on the news this morning that there are still alot of folks still trying to get out of Denver, having been stuck at the airport all this time........

Ann

(12/23/06 11:12PM) — Kristal Kraft ~ Denver Real Estate

Sharon ~ thanks for the holiday wishes. We had a wonderful day...priceless in fact.  I hope you enjoy your holiday gathering as well!

John ~ Urban Snowboarding it is!  I really hope she doesn't do that again...

Ann ~ Thank you Ann, you are always so kind!  Yes, there are still people at the airport.  It's going to take a long time to get them all out.

Happy Holidays to all!

Merry Christmas Kristal !!

(12/23/06 11:15PM) — Kristal Kraft ~ Denver Real Estate

Merry Christmas to  you too.  Who's  the guy in the glasses?

kk :)

My bodyguard has decided he might talk to me more if he blogs.  Let's see where that one goes. I am scared. Very scared.

(12/23/06 11:43PM) — Kristal Kraft ~ Denver Real Estate

Cool!  I'm happy to hear your Bodyguard will start using his voice.   Hummm now I can get him to tell me your secrets.  I understand there is a reward out about your birthdate.

kk

THAT looks like fun! My friend flew to Santa Cruz, from DIA today. 3 hours in security line ... ! We had our first plow through today - right before sundown. This is crazy! ...but beautiful. Your pictures are wonderful, too.   Stay warm and have a wonderful holiday!

(12/24/06 12:14AM) — Kristal Kraft ~ Denver Real Estate

Mariana ~ At least some folks are getting out. It is the people with confirmed reservations.  Your friend was lucky.  My HOA snowplows came by at 4 a.m. to dig out the rest of my driveway and walk.  Nice wake up call!

Have a Happy Holiday and a  Prosperous New Year!

kk

Kristal,

Looks like a lot of fun. At least you are having a "White Christmas". I have been working with a company out of Denver and they are all "out of the office" last week.  It's sunny and warm here, which is absolutely amazing on Xmas morning. Have a great holiday.

(12/25/06 08:02AM) — Jeff Turner

Kristal, just a little Holiday greeting for you this morning.

merry

(12/25/06 08:20AM) — Kristal Kraft ~ Denver Real Estate

Karen ~ thanks for the warm wishes.  I hope you enjoy your day of Christmas Joy too!

Your clients were out of the office because they just couldn't get there!  We enjoyed two days of peace on the third day we were out shoveling and looking for the plow.  Cheering it actually.

Merry Christmas to you!

kk

(12/25/06 08:22AM) — Kristal Kraft ~ Denver Real Estate

Jeff ~ Thanks for the BIG Christmas wish.  I know it's big because you have a lovely big family!

Merry Christmas to you and yours too!

kk

(12/25/06 08:29AM) — Jennifer Fivelsdal, Rhinebeck NY

I am sure your daughter had fun.  Can't believe it is the 25th and still no snow in my area.

I was  also glad to see that slowly but surely Denver was digging out.

(12/25/06 08:38AM) — Kristal Kraft ~ Denver Real Estate

Jennifer ~ I fear we hogged all the snow here in the west.  Denver is digging out and the sunshine is helping now.  The sun works better than anything!

Happy Holidays to you Jennifer ~ I wish I could send you some snow!

kk

Is it global warming?  We haven't had more than flurries this year and even those are rare.

(12/25/06 06:06PM) — Carole Cohen Realtor®, ePRO

Kristal you always have the best blog post titles. And your photos ALMOST make the snow look fun. Hope things are back to normal now. And Merry Christmas

(12/25/06 07:01PM) — Kristal Kraft ~ Denver Real Estate

MF ~ Global Warming?  Tell us in Colorado and New Mexico about that.  It's plenty chilly here!

Carole ~ Thanks!  Some pictures are just made for wild titles.  Normal is a state of mind...we are working on it!  Merry Christmas to you too!

kk

I feel so otta the loop in Southern Colorado. But one of the benefits is watching the deer walk across the snow in my yard. Not the same thing as hang'n at the History Museum.

(12/29/06 05:50PM) — Kristal Kraft ~ Denver Real Estate

Dena ~ watching the deer or the dears is more my style these days.  Rooftop shredding is for the young (and crazy)
