How to settle a collection account in Hartford CT: Part 1 of a 3 part series

How to settle a collection account: Part 1 of a 3 part series

So you have an account on your credit report that shows in collection with a balance. Now what?

Step one is to "validate" the debt. If you hire a professional credit repair company, make sure they are performing this service for you. If you are doing it yourself then follow these instructions.

You will want to send, via certified mail (don't cheap out on me), a letter to the collection company asking them to validate the debt. You will find the address for the collection company somewhere on your credit report (different credit reports have the information in different spots). You letter should ask them for:

  • A copy of the contract that created the account;
  • A list of any goods or services that were provided and proof of delivery for those goods or services;
  • Monthly statements that show the charges you are now attempting to collect;
  • Proof that you now own or are the assignee of the account;
  • Verification or copy of any judgment if applicable;
  • The name of the original creditor
  • If licensed to collect debts in this State, your license numbers
  • Registered Agent information

Don't assume that the collection company will have proper documentation that you owe the debt, most do not.

Stay tuned in two days for part 2 - what to do once you have your validation results and how to use those results to YOUR benefit!
