Today I had to meet a HVAC contractor to service the furnace and air conditioning at a condo that clients of mine recently rented in the Harbour Landing complex in New Haven. This complex is located in an area of New Haven that I travel through frequenly.
Yet today as I drove down Long Wharf Drive whcih runs between 1-95 and the New Haven Harbor I noticed for the first time numerous monuments that were placed along the harbourfront. It's funny how you drive by an area numerous times and don't take notice of the surroundings.
There was something that drew me to this spot today so I parked my car in the parking lot and walked across the street to see what these monuments were.
At the west end of Long Wharf Park is a black granite V for the Vietnam Memorial listing the names in honor of the fallen men and women from the New Haven area.

As I got closer I noticed a framed photograph and an American Flag at the base of the monument. It brought me to tears to think of the loss of this child's daddy and the sacrifice he made for his family and his country.

Not far from this monument was one other dedicated to the memory of the members of all of our Armed Services during the Vietnam War from 1959 to 1975.
At the top of the monument is the seal for the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Air Force and Vietnam.
The inscription reads:
This memorial is dedicated in honor of the men and women who served during the Vietnam War.
From the surrounding ciites and towns - New Haven, East Haven, West Haven, North Haven, Hamden, Orange and Woodbridge.

A few feet away from the Vietnam Memorial monuments is the Korean War Memorial honoring those who served during the Korean War from the Greater New Haven area.

It was a very sombering moment as I walked along and read the names that were engraved in each block.

Next to the Korean War Memorial is a monument in recognition of the service of the members of the 1st Battalion 102nd Infantry in the war against terrorism. The 1st Battalion 102nd Infantry has served the New Haven area since 1638.

The last monument in the park is dedicated to all men and women wounded in all our wars.
The inscription on this monument read:
My Stone Is Red For The Blood They Shed.
The Medal I Bear Is My Country's Way To Show They Care.
If I can Be Seen By All Mankind Maybe Peace Will Come In My Lifetime.

Whether you travel this route daily or are just driving along the I-95 corridor through Long Wharf please take a few minutes to honor our heroes.
