There really is no time left to prepare for Irene. If you didn't do it already, well, it will have to do. I am counting on only a tropical storm by the time it hits me, but the coastline of Connecticut is certainly at risk. Here in my town we suffer from the ravages of flooding of the Housatonic River. This wreaks much havoc on the town, especially for those who live in flood prone areas. And as Governor Malloy of CT has pointed out, we have far more trees now than we did in years back during the last major hurricane that hit the state.
The coastline of course will take the brunt of the storm. As it moves inland I am sure it will weaken some. As you move further inland we are more rural. And remember, many of our farms took a big hit with the snow loads this winter. Some still are working with weakened structures. All around me are corn fields for the dairy farmers. The corn is not ready to cut, they needed some dry days to cut, and the time to cut is weeks away. We also have beautiful orchards here full of apples, pears, waiting to finish ripening. This is of grave concern. We have been hit hard enough financially, this burden the farmers don't need.
Of course I am worried about myself and my family. I have done what I can. We are without batteries, we will survive. There is water, there is food, there is a gas grill to cook on, as long as no trees fall on the house (I have too many old pine trees on one side of the house) we will be fine. But as I drove home this evening past acres and acres of corn still standing, my heart grew heavy.
To all my friends who are in the path of Irene, I hope you stay safe and dry. Don't take any chances, just stay sheltered and read books, write down ideas for future featured posts, take pictures, whatever you can do to amuse yourself. I am hoping to get a few naps in myself!
Both of my MLS's sent out notices about how we can access the MLS from mobile phones, one is shutting down before midnight tonight to protect the equipment. I have to admit I probably won't be worried about getting on in the next day or two. But they are prepared!
Now we are seeing tornado watches being issued up and down the eastern sea board, including some inland CT counties. Bad enough the TV is full of hurricane news, now there is nothing but the National Weather Service blaring warnings at us. Take care, see you on the flip side!
