New Milford CT fun things to do, Open Farm Day, Sunny Valley Farm

This year marks the 19th annual Open Farm Day at Sunny Valley Farm, 8 Sunny Valley Lane in New Milford, CT. So far it looks as if the weather will be spectacular, the weather folks are predicting a sunny day with temperatures hovering around a very agreeable 66º. PERFECT for exploring Sunny Valley Farm.

Sunny Vally Open Farm Day, a mooo-ving experience
Rain or Shine! Predictions are for a big shine!

A few demonstrations you can see:

  • border collie herding (I know this is very cool, ever seen a border collie at work?)
  • goat soap making (courtesy Goat Boy Soap)
  • syrup making
  • spinning

Check out the farm equipment, both antique and modern (the kids will love this, and me too) and take a ride through the corn maze, meet Clover, a 3 year old pot bellied pig complete with story time, pet Gunner and Squeak, a pair of miniature donkeys, of course pet the rest of the animals, learn about Sunny Valley Farm and The Nature Conservancy. The New Milford Youth Agency will be preparing baked goods, pumpkin soup, fresh veggie burritos, hot dogs and more.

A big shout out and thank you goes to Union Savings Bank and the Rotary Club of New Milford for their generous support. They help to keep this a free event for all to attend.

I have plans to be there, and you will probably see me hanging around trying to get some good shots of those beautiful Dutch Belted cows that live on Sunny Valley Farm. These farms are a great tribute to our agrarian roots here in Litchfield County, and a wonderful education on how important it is to save our farms. As the bumper sticker says.. "No Farms, No Food". And how true it is. Come and have a great time, learn a few things, pet a few animals, try some food and just have a wonderful day!
