PC Gone Amuck...Mayor Bloomberg No First Responders Or Clergy At 10th anniversary of 9/11
It's hard to believe that it's been ten years since our lives, our country and our way of living was so shaken by the attack on our homeland when terrorists flew airplanes into the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001.
The attacks that took place that day at the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and the crash of Flght 93 in Shanksville, PA to thwart off an attack of the U.S. Capitol shook us at the core of our being and was meant to bring us to our knees.
Little did the terrorists who methodically plotted and planned these attacks understand the depth of the true spirit of our nation when faced with adversity. We are a people who all came together in unity in spite of the hardships, challenges, sadness and intense grief that shook at our souls as we tried to comprehend and come to grips with the overwhelming loss of life that day.
Now as we prepare to observe the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 at Ground Zero to honor the thousands who tragically died and sacrificed their lives I read this article yesterday that the Mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg is not inviting First Responders or any members of the clergy to the memorial service.
In another article Andrew Brent a spokesman for the Mayor said the commemoration ceremony is for the victim's families. Excuse me but the First Responders who were members of the fire department, police department and Port Authority are a family of close knit brothers and sisters who at a moment's notice risk their lives for the safety of the people of New York.
If it wasn't for their valiant efforts on 9/11 the loss of lives could have been even worse. Hundreds of first responders perished in the Twin Towers so that others could live. For the Mayor to exclude them from attending this ceremony is a slap in their face and their families and is disgraceful.
The fact that Bloomberg also wants to exclude any members of the clergy from speaking at the ceremony is in my opinion political correctness gone amuck. Please tell me who gives him the authority to dictate who can and who cannot be there. Since when can't there be a moment of prayer for ALL that encompasses all faiths and religions? Was it not the clergy and our faith no matter your religious beliefs that has kept us strong during the days, weeks and years following 9/11?
This is not the same America I grew up in where EVERYONE was included and no one was excluded for fear that it might offend someone or some group. As each year goes by it appears that the memories of September 11, 2001 have faded away for far too many. There is no greater honor or tribute that we can show to those who lost their lives that day than to think back to how we all felt in the days following 9/11 and to come together as one nation with compassion, strength and unity again.
