A Visit To The Lyman Orchards Corn Maze With My Granddaughter
I've never seen a corn maze and after reading Brenda Mullen's post about her day with her daughter at the South Texas MAiZE I knew I had to find one in my local area to go and visit. Who better to ask than my granddaughter who had gone to one last year.
Luckily it was a beautiful sunny day last Saturday and my granddaughter was spending the weekend so it was the just the perfect opportunity for us to take a drive to Lyman Orchards for my first adventure into a corn maze.

My first thought when we arrived was I couldn't believe how many people were there and how big a corn maze actually is. The one at Lyman Orchards is four acres in size. This year's corn maze honoring the American flag and the American eagle was designed by Brett Herbst a world renowned designer who is currently the world record holder for creating the most mazes.

After paying for our tickets it was off to the check-in table to pick out one of the many sheets they had for our journey into the maze based on a variety of different subjects. Each one had a list of 10 questions with three answers to choose from. I thought how hard could this be.... just choose the right answer....then turn right or turn left and we'll be through this maze in no time. My granddaughter picked out what we thought we be an easy one for both of us TV/Music and off we went to entrance.
Once we entered the maze huge corn stalks surrounded us. I realized this was not going to be as easy as it looked and wondered what did I get myself into. Brooke on the other hand was loving every second of it. With our sheet of questions in hand we managed to get through to the half way point in a reasonable amount of time but when we went over and under the same bridge four times it wasn't hard to figure out we were going around inc circles. I was beginning to have second thoughts if we would ever find our way out of this maze!

If you've never been through a maze before weaving around the winding paths only to reach a dead end makes you wish you had a GPS in hand to help navigate you through what seems like miles of never ending rows of corn stalks. Once we reached the ninth marker you could feel the adrenaline rush in our excited anticipation of finally making it through to the end!!

Once our feat was accomplished it was time to celebrate in the Lyman Orchards store which was jam packed with people indoors and out. The inside of the store was filled with an array of fresh apples, vegetables, pies, cookies and delicious apple cider,. Outside stood a line of people waiting to purchase hot apple crisp with whipped cream while others were picking out pumpkins or a colorful basket of beautiful flowers.

There was also a pond where children and their families could feed the ducks and geese. It was the perfect autumn setting surrounded by the colorful beauty of the fall foliage.

Lyman Orchards is located in Middlefiled CT at the junctions of Routes 147 & 157 and easily accessible from all areas of the state. It is also home to the Lyman Orchards Golf Club featuring two championship golf courses both ranked among Connecticut's Top Ten Public Golf Courses "The Jones Course" designed by Robert Trent Jones and "The Player Course" designed by Gary Player.
There ae special events held year round at Lyman Orchards that include demonstrations, competitions, festivals, pick your own, and activities for the entire family. Visit the Lyman Orchards website for more information on their spring, summer, fall and winter schedule.
And if the experience of finding your way through a corn maze isn't enough for you just imagine wandering along three acres of sunflowers when the Lyman Orchard Sunflower Maze opens up next summer. Having reached the pinnacle of success and so much fun in my first corn maze you can bet I'm looking foward to the challenge of venturing into that sunflower maze next year.
