When I was in high school, everyone went to the football games. A few people went to the boys' soccer games. The girls' sports? Perhaps a few mothers would attend. In Trumbull, CT, girls' soccer has been a powerful force for years. It's a wonderful thing.

My two nieces, Jackie and Christy, are talented young ladies who played varsity soccer for Trumbull High School. We enjoyed going to many of their games, and frequently traveled for the championship matches. They, and the team, enjoyed huge successes. The important lessons of teamwork, good sportsmanship, and how to be gracious when winning as well as losing, have stood them well over time. Additionally, Christy won a scholarship to Providence College for her soccer skills.

Team sports are important. It doesn't matter if your sport of choice is the debate team or baseball. Get in it, encourage the children you know to participate, and they'll learn important life lessons.
