Swinging for Glory and Campers . . . Pay it Forward

October 1 & 2 was the weekend for area golfers to try and make a Hole in One with the winners being local underprivileged youngsters from area towns that get to attend summer camp.

The Greater Waterbury Campership fund has made it possible for participating towns to send their applicants to camps for a week, at 19 participating camps around the state. This year there were 464 applications for camping slots. The 2011 goal is to raise $140,000 which is at the 84% mark currently.

Originally the shoot-out was scheduled for the previous weekend, but the heavy rains pushed it off a week. The qualifying rounds were at Prospect Driving Range in Prospect ,CT and JD's Driving range in Cheshire CT. For $10, golfers got 6 balls to try and place within a 20 FT circle about 125 yards out.

The closest 8 contenders would get a chance on October 2 to hit one ball and get it in the cup at the #7 hole at nearby Highland Greens Golf Course.

Prizes for this event were respectable, with a brand new Hyundai Elantra for whomever hit the first Hole in One on Sunday at Highland Greens. The consolation prizes, if no one hit the hole were for closest to the pin, and were rounds of golf at many of the local private golf courses, which in itself would be worth the time.

I spent my time on Sat, but was not able to make the finals on Sunday as business took a priority.
